Oregon's Superintendent of the Year
In a surprise announcement surrounded by students, staff, and community members at Crook County High School last week, Dr. Sara Johnson was recognized as Oregon’s Superintendent of the Year.
Representatives from the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) made the trip from Salem to present the prestigious award for achievement in several areas: Leadership for Learning, Communication, Professionalism, and Community Involvement. Dr. Johnson will now be in the running for national superintendent of the year.
The award is a crowning achievement for the district as Crook County High School Principal Michelle Jonas was Oregon’s Secondary Principal of the Year last year and CCHS Athletic Director Rob Bonner 5A Athletic Director of the Year.
Check out the story below and watch the moment Dr. Johnson realized what was happening!
CCSD Recognizes Amazing Students!
Meet Alex Molina. He's a senior at Crook County High School and currently serves as the Student Body President and is part of the Cheerleading Squad. Did you know he's homegrown? Alex has been a student in our district since preschool.
His favorite part about high school is being involved in leadership, and his long-term goal is to attend college at OSU and return to CCHS as a teacher. We think that's fantastic!
Alex says: "When I graduate in the spring, I hope that I've inspired my classmates and left a legacy of promoting and improving school PRIDE: Participation, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence.
Way to go, Alex. Thanks for being an AMAZING Student!
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Did you know that 14% of students in Crook County School District are Hispanic?
In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we'd like to recognize three wonderful staff members for their support to families, staff, and students. From left to right:
- Ms. Esmeralda Figueroa - BBE Spanish Teacher
- Ms. Daisy Avacedo - BBE Welcome Center
- Ms. Jaz Orozco - CCMS/CCHS Welcome Center
Ms. Orozco and Ms. Avacedo provide translation services for our entire school district and serve important roles as advocates and liaisons for our Hispanic families. Ms. Figueroa is in her second year of teaching Spanish & culture to all K-5 students at Barnes Butte Elementary.
Thank you, ladies, for your service and support. We appreciate you!
Names & Faces Create Important Connections
Dr. Johnson is re-emphasizing a district-wide effort this year called the Big 5 Priorities. These buckets focus on knowing students by name, improved attendance, more mental health resources, better tools and resources for teachers in the classroom, and getting yearly feedback from staff, students, and families.
“School culture is at the heart of this strategy. Classroom participation and achievement will improve when students feel welcome, safe, and supported. That’s going to be where this district puts its energy and resources moving forward,” said Dr. Johnson.
Crook County Middle School and Steins Pillar Elementary School have implemented simple, yet effective strategies that make students feel welcome and known. Learn more by clicking the two buttons below.
