Carol Rae Ranch Elementary
September 2019
Principal’s Corner
It has been a great start to this school year and students are well into class routines and new learning. Thank you for reviewing the information in our monthly newsletter and other information that is sent home with students. Parent support at Carol Rae is truly wonderful and we appreciate all that you do. Don’t forget to opt in to join PTSO (it’s free) to get their information. I hope you will consider helping PTSO with one or more events this year. A fun event is fast approaching: Grandparent Lunch days will be in September, and we look forward to having them. Look for the details in this newsletter and please send in an RSVP if they will attend. We will also have a patriotic flag ceremony on 9-11 at 8:00 AM. This is a school-wide assembly and a Carol Rae tradition. Please join us if you can. Finally, I hope you will join me on 9/16, for a Morning Mug Meeting- a chance to talk with the principal (and have a mug of coffee, juice…).
General Reminders:
If you use the parent pick up area, you should have a pick-up sign that needs to be displayed in the front windshield. This will help us get students to cars more quickly. If you need a sign, please contact the office or your child’s teacher.
Educationally yours,
Thea Hansen

Food brought into School
All food brought into the school to share with other students needs to be purchased. This includes treats for birthdays or other celebrations. Purchased items have been prepared in a kitchen licensed by the Maricopa County Department of Health and contains a label listing all of the ingredients found in the food item. This is important as many students have food allergies. Healthy items are encouraged.
Emergency Response
The District has procedures in place to handle emergency and crisis situations. All schools conduct regular exercises and drills to practice lockdown and evacuation procedures. In the event of a civil emergency, the District works closely with the Town of Gilbert and the City of Mesa police and fire departments and emergency managers to assist staff, students and parents in preparing for, responding to, or recovering from a crisis. During a crisis situation, the District will provide updated information on the District’s website home page, www.gilbertschools.net and by phone @ 480-497-3333.
Student Council
Welcome to another fun and exciting year here at Carol Rae! We have several new families in our school and I welcome all of you to the best school in the valley! Of course I am a little partial, but we truly have awesome families in our Carol Rae community! I am very happy to introduce our Student Council Officers for the 2019-2020 school year. Our President is Isabella Cruz, Vice-President is Jaxon Compiseno, Secretary is Andrew Ruden, Treasurer is Clara Ray, and our Historian is Bethany Schlink. They are excited to lead our students in a great year of learning and are ready to roll with fun activities for all of us.
We have a student store that will be open during lunch recess on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Our store has several items from .25 - $2.00. We try to have things that are useful for class, a few snacks, and fun items to play with at recess or after school. We will sell grams at various holidays to send to a friend, brother, sister, parent, or teacher. We will also have new school t-shirts and order forms will be coming home soon. We will have popsicle and donut days after school and notes will be sent home to inform you of dates. We also have service projects we participate in so our students experience the value of giving back to our community.
Student Council helps me with our yearly Canned Food Drive that will begin in November, and our Giving Tree project that begins in December. They also plan school wide activities such as Crazy Days and Color Days on Fridays. Our officers meet each month with class representatives to plan activities as well as get ideas from our student body to provide a fun learning environment for our school.
All of the funds received from our store and other sales are deposited into our Student Council account through the district. With that we can help provide programs, recess equipment, benches, pizza and popsicle parties (as rewards), Character luncheon treats, and other items to benefit our students. We strive to keep a positive learning environment for your child and have fun experiences along the way. You will be informed of activities throughout the year and if you have questions or concerns please feel free to call me, check our Facebook page, web page, and newsletters. So, we’re off to a fantastic year and I welcome you to Carol Rae Ranch Elementary as we “Surf’s up and Catch a W.A.V.E.” COYOTES!
Sincerely,
Carolyn Wilson- Music Teacher and Student Council Adviser 507-1359 x.127

September is Lice Prevention Month!
By Elizabeth Compiseno, RN
Since September is Lice Prevention Month, let us take a minute to discuss what lice are and how to prevent and treat them.
What Are Lice?
We’ve all heard of lice, but do you know what they REALLY are? Lice are small, wingless, grayish-tan parasitic insects that live and breed in the human hair. They feed off of blood in the scalp. Nits are the lice eggs. They are tiny, oval-shaped eggs, about the size of a knot in thread, that are attached firmly to the hair shaft by the female, generally within ½” of the scalp. Research has shown that lice do not pose a medical or public health hazard. They do, however, cause significant itching and secondary infections are possible as a result of germs getting into open wounds on the scalp caused from scratching. Head lice can survive for approximately 1 to 2 days without a human host and cannot live on family pets.
How Are Lice Spread?
Lice crawl, and quickly. They do not jump or fly. While lice are typically spread from head to head contact, they can also be spread by sharing brushes and combs, towels, bedding, etc. Sleepovers are a common place that lice are acquired. Lice ARE NOT a sign of bad hygiene and can be contracted by anyone regardless of their cleanliness. Encourage your children not to share brushes, hair items, pillows, blankets, etc., with other children, and encourage them to avoid head-to-head contact.
My Child Has Lice, What Do I Do?
If your child has lice, please notify the Health Office and treat them before they return to school. There are several options available, including over the counter products such as Rid or Nix, and prescription medications available from your doctor. One of the most important steps in lice removal is the removal of nits. Not all nits are always killed during the treatment process, and manual removal is important to prevent a re-infestation. Make sure to check all family members for lice and treat appropriately as well. Treating the child’s head is just one part. Cleaning of the environment is also a necessary step. Wash all bedding that the child has slept in using hot water and drying on high heat. Any clothes they have worn over the last 3 days should also be washed in hot water and dried. Heat kills lice. Make sure to vacuum all couches, rugs, car seats, etc. that may have touched the child’s hair to prevent re-infestation. Any personal items that cannot be laundered such as stuffed animals should be sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks., All combs, hair brushes, hair clips, etc., should be soaked in hot water for 5-10 minutes as the treatment product recommends. These steps should all be taken on the same day as treatment of the head.
When Can My Child Return to School?
Your child may return to school once they have been treated and no live lice remain. Before returning to class, they must first see the School Nurse, with a parent in attendance, to be cleared. Lice should not be a cause of significant school absence, we want your children happy and learning here at school.
If you have questions or would like more information, contact the School Nurse.
