Beating the Odds

Lakeview Staff Newsletter - May 10

With great appreciation

Thank you again, everyone, for the work you do for students every day (and night ... and weekend). There is no doubt that education is a difficult vocation with high expectations. And there is no doubt that the team at Lakeview is the best around! Happy teacher appreciation week.

Thank you also to Mrs. Swanson, Mrs. Clausen, and Mrs. Ahler for their work to celebrate all of you. We are indeed appreciative of our parents in leadership positions and the many ways they contribute.

Several short items

• Everyone - including paras - should be finishing your end-of-year documents in My Learning Plan. That means everything is submitted by May 17. Teachers can find links to EE documents on our staff meeting agenda. Staff who supervise paras should be sure that paras can get into MLP and complete goal reflections. You press "submit" when finished.

• We have a new 5th grade teacher! Her name is Jessica Smith. Jessica has taught for approximately seven years, the last five in the Fontana school district. You may have a chance to meet Jessica before the end of the school year.

• Tech MiniLab Day - This past Monday, the 3rd through 5th grade teachers participated in 90-minute PD sessions with Tammy. The focus of the sessions was making technology part of the routine to engage students, especially through features built into Google Classroom. The article that was used that day is a great reflection on the SAMR model, which guides our thinking about tech integration in the classroom (link here). Thank you, Tammy, and our teachers for thinking deeply about this.

Playground Video

We have been doing some initial planning for upgrades to the east playground, including some bigger equipment for 4th & 5th grade students. Mrs. Swanson and I have spent quite a bit of time this week working on a sizable grant (yes, the same Mrs. Swanson that has coordinated so much of Teacher Appreciation week!) Part of this grant application was a 2-minute video. Please enjoy!

Office renovations

This summer, in conjunction with the safety updates to the lobby area, our office will undergo some much-needed renovations. This will include carpeting the office and hallway to the workroom, painting, some electrical upgrades (clearly they didn't need many outlets in the office in 1958), and new furniture. It will look very welcoming and professional. You can see two pictures below. The first photo is what it will look like as you walk into the office. The second is a reverse perspective. The colors are correct except that the walls will be a pale green. Ignore the different-looking windows and doors in the pictures - those are not changing.

Coffee or Tea, anyone?

DeLynn Charon and her 18-21 year old students from the high school will be offering a coffee/tea service at Lakeview on Friday, May 17. Expect an email from DeLynn on May 13 or 14. It would cost $1 and then DeLynn and her students would come to Lakeview on the 17th to brew and deliver your beverage.

Invention Convention

Thank you to Jen Cosgrove, Courtney Schwaab, and Diane Carrier. The students did a great job!
