This Week 11/13/20
A message from Mr. Brown
Another Friday, and another successful week of school at Pocantico Hills – amazing!! We capped off our 10th consecutive perfect week of school with World Kindness Day today, as we took extra time in class and throughout the school to appreciate and recognize the goodness in each other. Of course, offering kind words, a helping hand, inclusive friendship, and validation are all things we should and do strive for every day, but today is simply a day to take that extra step and talk about it more explicitly. We’ve also attached some Kindness coloring sheets courtesy of the Pocantico Hills School Foundation – thank you!
POCO IS #POCO-STRONG, BUT THE REGION IS STRUGGLING
I’m sure you’ve seen the headlines about the rise in COVID cases around the region. Unfortunately, because we sit within the region, we may effectively be forced by executive order to go fully remote in the near future, even despite all our incredible efforts and perfect track record. However, IF this were to occur, we’ll be ready to seamlessly transition to a fully remote model and we’ll be sharing specific details, expectations, and support plans in the coming days so we are all on the same page.
In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed! Every day we have together is another gift!
Remember the huge news about our scrumptious cafeteria meals – they are now FREE FOR EVERYONE, EVERY DAY, for the ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR! Here is the order form for the week of 11/23: https://forms.gle/GxrZpteKTaPbkoyV9
It’s a short week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but meals are available for over the break as well - simply select for those days in the order form. The form can also be accessed on the website, app and PTA Facebook page.
Snacks, a la carte items and extra entrees still cost money, but every child can get a complete lunch every day for $0.00.

PARENT WORKSHOPS: AN INTRODUCTION TO STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES
We’ll be holding two virtual evening events next week to share an overview of our different support systems here at Pocantico. It will be presented by Christy Perricelli and many of the members of the support services team. Come learn about the differences between a 504 Plan, Special Education Services, and the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, and that’s just for starters! Here are the links for parents to join the workshops:

MIDDLE SCHOOL: 1st QUARTER ENDS / 2nd QUARTER BEGINS
Today was the last day of the 1st quarter in grades 5-8, and Monday marks the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Report cards will be posted to the parent portal at the end of next week.
DRESSING FOR WINTER WEATHER
We all know these days of 60-degree weather are about to end, but our determination to get kids outside in the fresh air isn’t. Please send your child to school with proper coats and accessories. If it’s in the 30s and above, our gym teachers are looking to take kids out, and recess will be outside as well. it’s better to have a coat and then choose to take it off then to not have anything at all!
PTA THANKSGIVING FUNDRAISER
This year the PTA will be raising money to provide grocery gift cards for community members in need. Please see the attached flyer that explains how you can participate. We have so much to be thankful for – this is another wonderful way to share our gratitude and show our support.
REMINDERS ON COVID PROTOCOLS AND REMOTE LEARNING
Thank for continuing to follow the path of playing it safe and having your under-the-weather children evaluated and COVID-tested, and then keeping them home until protocols say it is safe and allowable to return. Important Reminders:
- Nurse Gay must have the official test results or doctor’s note in hand BEFORE she can allow your child to return to school. Please send them in advance of your child arriving; otherwise, we have to keep your child in the nurse’s office until we receive the document and we don’t want to do that!
- If you keep your symptomatic child home, or if you have to pick your child up from school, remote instruction will begin after the teachers have 24 hours to prepare. So, if it’s Wednesday morning and you decide to keep your child home, your child can begin remote instruction on THURSDAY. Please coordinate remote learning logistics with your child’s teacher(s).
- Keep the lines of communication open – email/call Nurse Gay and email your child’s teachers if you are keeping your child home from school. The sooner we are aware, the quicker we can prepare.
Finally, to all our Hindu, Sikh, and Jain families, I wish you a Happy Diwali!
Have a wonderful and safe weekend everyone!

HAVE YOU BECOME A 2020-2021 PTA MEMBER?
The most important step in making sure our PTA continues to sponsor the many wonderful programs and services for all of our children is for you to become a PTA member for the school year. Membership means no strings attached. By becoming a member, you are supporting the national, state and our local Pocantico Hills PTA - you are not committing to any volunteer roles or jobs! (although we welcome any help!) We’ll thank you with a POCO magnet, and the first 50 members will receive a Pocantico lanyard. You can send in the attached form, or join online and pay by credit card: Poco.memberhub.store
