General News! Week of February 12th- 15th
Happy Valentine's Day Week !
Apologies for the confusion about progress reports...In case you haven't heard Progress Reports went home with students last Thursday. If you haven't seen your child's yet, or signed and returned the report card jacket, please ask them about it and return it ASAP. Thanks!
Your response and support for our Bobcats One Read, has been terrific. Thanks to all who have already sent in books with their students, as well as those of you who have sent in some extra copies for other students...greatly appreciated. Our goal is to have everyone squared away with a copy of the book by this Thursday. We still have some copies available at school for $5 while they last.
We are also excited to hear that many of you will be reading along with us. The more the merrier! Remember our kick off for A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle the day after we return from our Presidents’ Day break on Thursday, February 22nd
In addition to participating in classroom discussions, lunchtime activities, and optional contests related to the book, students and families may choose to cap off the One Read by attending an exclusive SMMS showing of the movie adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time at our local theater on Saturday, March 10th, at 9:00 a.m. for $8/ticket.
“Stories make us more alive, more human, more courageous, more loving.” Madeleine L’Engle

Please remember your child must have a signed permission slip in order to stay, as well as an indication of how they will be getting home. Pick up is at 3:45.Thank you for being prompt!

Language Arts-
This Week in Language Arts:
Both of our novel studies will continue this week. Students who are reading To Kill A Mockingbird: This week the trial of Tom Robinson is in full swing. Students will be exposed to the process of a trial, as well collecting textual evidence to aide in determining Tom's innocence or guilt. We will hopefully use this information as we delve into the argumentative writing process.
In The Watson's Go To Birmingham students have arrived at Grandma Sands in Alabama. Byron, the "official juvenile delinquent" of the family, may have met his match in Grandma Sands'. This part of our story takes place during one of the darkest moments in American history and civil unrest. We should be wrapping this novel up by the end of the week, and begin working on Argumentative writing.
In both texts, we will continue to use evidence from the text to develop basic argumentative points that we can later begin to construct into essays.
Independent Choice Reading Book #3 will be due Feb. 21st, and Book 4 by March 7th ( A Wrinkle in Time will complete this requirement)
This is week #5 for Tween Tribune, and our progress continues! I am encouraged to see their overall comprehension is improving, and I have seen some great written responses to the "Critical Thinking Question". These activities will definitely increase their ability to be successful on the EOG and in life! Please remember, the only way to increase Lexile levels and improve writing scores is through independent practice.
Thanks for your continued support from home!
Science- Mrs. Madera
Physical Science
Last week we reviewed each day in class for the WAVES Mastery Assessment. Students should be reviewing the different parts of a wave, behaviors of waves and how it relates to sound and light. They can find this information in their notebook, their light book, and on Google Classroom (Waves, Sound, Light, and Optics assignments).
This Mastery Assessment focuses on the application and relationships between wave properties and the way we hear and see things. This has really been stressed in class labs and online simulation assignments, as well as the review assignments conducted last week. Last week’s review assignment was reviewed in class today. A new review was started today in class today on USA Test Prep. This review is due on Wednesday, February 14th. Kahoot, quizlet, and quizizz links have also been added to Google Classroom. These are great 10-15 minute study links to practice each night.

This week, Team 8-2 Mathematics will be testing on Unit 4 and Unit 5. Overall, the students worked hard and demonstrated proficiency over the past several weeks in both units. I suspect most grades will reflect their focus. Please encourage your students to continue putting forth the effort that I’ve seen over the past few weeks.
Once testing is complete on Tuesday, we will conduct a Formative Assessment Lesson. This lesson is not formally graded, but provides the students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of relations and functions to real-world applications.
Our next unit, beginning Wednesday, February 21, will cover Unit 6: Linear models and tables. In this unit, students will be required to write linear equations from tables and word problems. I have posted a study guide in Google Classrooms and assigned practice problems in USA Testprep for those that want to study and practice in advance.
