Positivity Project- Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence

This week we are focused on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence.

Appreciation of beauty and excellence is the ability to identify and enjoy that which is admirable in the world. There are three types of goodness in which positive psychology focuses: physical beauty (e.g. a sunset, song, or building); an exceptional skill or talent; and moral goodness (e.g. a character strength). Appreciation of beauty can generate awe; appreciation of a skill can generate admiration; and appreciation of moral goodness can generate moral elevation. All of these feelings (awe, admiration, and moral elevation) help us forget ourselves and find increased joy and meaning in the world.

That parent virtue for Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence is Transcendence. These strengths allow people to rise above their trouble and find meaning in the larger universe. Strengths of transcendence are appreciation, connection/purpose, gratitude, hope, and humor.

Use these quotes, videos and character card to discuss the character strength with your children.

"If the stars were to appear only but one night every thousand years, how man would marvel and adore." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Beauty is hidden in everything, just learn how to observe." ~unknown

Spring Break

Spring Break begins Monday, April 15th - Monday, April 22nd. School resumes on Tuesday, April 23rd @9:15!

No School - May 1!!

Buckhorn Creek Elementary and all Wake County Public Schools will be closed for students on Wednesday, May 1 due to a large number of teachers attending a rally at the General Assembly. Students will not need to make up this time based on the number of instructional hours already accumulated this year. Thank you for your support.

Volunteer and Lunch Bunch Change!

On May 28th, we are going to implement a no volunteer and no lunch bunch policy for the remainder of the year. We begin EOG testing for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students during this time. Limiting the number of guests will help ensure the best possible testing environment for our students. They have all worked hard and we want them to do their best. Thank you for your understanding.

EOG Information

3rd, 4th, and 5th grade families should take a moment to review the two letters below. Both letters are set to go out formally next Tuesday, April 30, in the Tuesday folders. However, we wanted to provide families with this information as soon as possible.

The first letter is general information about EOG testing for this year.

The second letter pertains specifically to the renorming of the scoring process for the Math EOG; delaying results until August, 2019.

Panorama Survey

Wake County Public Schools System has reached out to get your input via the Panorama Survey. The intent of the survey is to help us better understand how we can develop a stronger partnership to support student achievement! This survey is important to our continued work around family engagement.

We thank you in advance for your thoughtful responses. If you have any questions about the survey or did not receive the link, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
