The Bullpup Pride
Pine Tree Hill Elementary- 2nd Nine Weeks Edition #WEAREONE
Everyday is a GREAT day to be a BULLPUP!
Principal's Message
Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope that everyone was able to enjoy our winter break in good health with family and friends. We have successfully conquered another nine weeks of school and an exciting one might I add! It's been a breath of fresh air having families back in our buildings to take part in the great things occurring here at PTH. We enjoyed a stellar third grade Alice in Wonderland performance, delicious 4K and kindergarten Thanksgiving Family Feasts, a festive Title I Holiday Family Night, and a number of other family friendly activities. Our Bullpup Santa Shop was also a huge success, thanks to our amazing PTO, and we named our 2022 Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Christina Absher! Please review our second nine week video found below that will showcase pictures from these events. I'm sure you may notice a familiar face or two! Thank you Mrs. Julie Mayo for our highlight video.
As we enter our third nine weeks of school, we are looking forward to a great start to 2022! Our students and staff are preparing for our winter benchmark assessments and we are looking forward to celebrating the growth that has been made. We have much to accomplish these next few months of school and your support is critical! Please also note that our afterschool tutoring program will relaunch with new guidelines on February 1st. This program will provide invited students with interventions in literacy and mathematics. Our food service department will provide a snack and transportation is optional for those in need. Please check your child's folder for an invitational letter and permission slip that is due on or before Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Again, this program is by invitation only.
Lastly, health is wealth! Please make note of the important covid updates found below from Nurse Thompkins. Please also join us in celebrating her for being on the frontline daily, working hard to keep us safe with such a pleasant smile and warm spirit! We are grateful for her leadership and guidance!
Again Happy New Year!
Message from our Assistant Principal
We have had a strong start to a new school year! Thank you for all that you do daily to partner with us here at Pine Tree Hill. Please note that Winter MAP testing will begin on January 18th and will be finished by February 3rd. Your child's teacher will provide you with their exact testing dates on their weekly newsletter. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of sleep the night before and eats a good breakfast the morning of their scheduled sessions. Please reach out to your child’s teacher via email if you have any testing questions or concerns.
Also, please make sure that if you are picking up your child in the car rider line in the afternoons that you have the appropriate car tags with your child’s name printed on it. If you need a tag, please see any of our front office staff for help. Additional tags are $5.

Counselor's Corner
Need Additional Support?
Individual and/or group counseling is available to students to address your child’s needs, concerns and other barriers to learning (e.g. anxiety, difficulty with peers, family change, etc.). These sessions are conducted one-on-one or in a small group setting with the school counselor, typically bi-weekly. These sessions are short-term in nature, and are utilized to address any immediate needs and subsequently monitor student progress. Individual or group counseling referrals for students can be made through the request of a student, parent, or teacher. Feel free to contact me by email at Sydney.Turner@kcsdschools.net to make a parent referral.
Academic Booster Shot:
Did you know you can help improve your student's reading performance by practicing simple games with them during your car rides around town?
Option 1: Say any word and ask your child to tell you what sound you said first. Ex: Tell me what sound you hear at the beginning of the word “moon”. The child would reply with /m/.
Option 2: Say any word and have your child tell you all the sounds they hear in that word: Ex: Tell me all the sounds you hear in the word “cat” - The child would reply with /c/ /a/ /t/.
Option 3: Live Radio Reading-Instead of listening to the radio have your child read out loud to you while you drive. For older students have a longer chapter book that stays in the car that they only get to read aloud from when you are riding., this will get your child excited about reading.
Awards Ceremony
This year we will host an end of the year awards ceremony to showcase student learning, growth, and success. Please make note of the following ceremony dates (times TBA):
1st & 2nd Grade: May 16th
3rd & 4th Grades: May 17th
5th Grade Promotional Ceremony: May 18th
Kindergarten: May 23rd
