Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Friday 30th September 2016
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
It has been a busy few weeks as always in Year 5 and it is hard to believe we are nearly at the end of our first themed unit of inquiry and the end of the first half term! The children have definitely settled well into Year 5 routines and expectations and deserve a well-earned break!
With this in mind, a reminder of the mid-term break starting at the end of next week (Monday 10th - 14th October). Also a reminder that there will be no school for the students on the following Monday 17th October due to the ESF-wide professional development day.
The Year 5 team are looking forward to seeing most of you next week at the Parent-Teacher consultations. (More information below).
Have a great mid-term break!
Unit of Inquiry
'Who We Are'.
Central Idea: Understanding how we learn helps us to take more responsibility.
Lines of Inquiry: An inquiry into...
different ways of learning (responsibility, trust)
how behaviours affect thinking and learning (function, self-regulation)
- our responsibilities as learners (reflection, perseverance)
The students have been gaining a better understanding of their own learning styles and how best to cater for them. The focus for the past few weeks has been on investigating strategies to suit their learning styles and applying them in their own learning. This was put to the test by using their strategies to learn how to count to 10 in Swahili!
The children are currently carrying out research about 'The Brain'.
The unit is coming to a close but we hope the students will use their strategies throughout the year to enhance their own learning.
The theme for the next unit is 'How the World Works'. There will be more information about this unit in the next newsletter.
