2017-2018 MANDATORY CURRICULUM WEBINARS
Here is some information regarding one of the mandatory division-wide Professional Learning Program (PLP) classes required for all elementary school teachers. The Department of Teaching and Learning has developed mandatory curriculum webinars that will provide information about updates to the elementary curriculum as it pertains to each content area, grade level and transformational learning. The webinars are designed to be viewed individually or as a grade level team and will include a component during the viewing time to pause and reflect. Following the webinar, teachers will have an opportunity to reflect on their personal transformational learning through the lens of the curriculum. This reflection will serve as documentation for the completion of the course.
The mandatory curriculum webinars will be uploaded to the SharePoint site and will be available beginning August 14. Teachers may begin viewing the webinars at any time after the release. PAC members will be asked to let us know which the grade level prefers:
1. Grade level to watch the video during Teacher Workwee
2. Grade level will watch the video on their own time and then this time will be recorded and applied to Flex Time.
Please note that while the webinars will be viewed in each building, they are not considered a site-based activity. The webinar will continue to be available for reference throughout the 2017-2018 school year.
A GoogleDoc link will be embedded in the webinar and also posted on SharePoint. Reflections should be completed by Sept. 8. Teachers will earn one PLP point for watching the webinar and completing the reflection. Questions may be directed to Nicole DeVries, administrative coordinator, in the Department of Teaching and Learning, at 263-1070 or emailed to Nicole.DeVries@vbschools.com. Thank you.
Flex Day - June 19
All teachers and teacher assistants may work a flex schedule for the staff day on June 19, 2017. You may begin working the extra time on May 30, 2017 and keep a log of the time worked. Teacher assistants and library assistants may not work more than 40 hours in any one week. The time sheets will provide documentation to support the hours reported in WISE. The flex day applies only to the following group of employees:
- All teachers whose schedule ends on June 19
- Teacher assistants and library media assistants
- Security assistants are not eligible because of security needs of the building*.
- Eligible employees who do not choose to make use of the flex day and do not wish to report on June 19, 2017, may choose to take personal reasons leave with approval of the building principal.
If you come in on a Saturday to ready your classroom for summer painting, these hours can be counted towards the Flex Day.
Get Your Tech On!
Sign-ups are well underway in Frontline for the summer conference. There are still plenty of spots available, but it filled up last year. Don’t wait too long!
I was given permission to share the session schedule. Click the links below to see what is being offered each day. More sessions are still being added, so be sure to check back!

ELEMENTARY SOCIAL STUDIES TEXTBOOK
On June 30, the division’s contract with Five Ponds Press will expire, at which time the social studies electronic textbooks and teacher resources will no longer be accessible. All elementary school social studies courses will continue to use the Five Ponds student editions for the 2017-2018 school year, which will continue to be referenced in the elementary social studies curriculum.
For questions, please contact Katie Niehoff, elementary social studies coordinator, at Kathleen.niehoff@vbschools.com or call 757-263-1020. Thank you.
ANNUAL REEMPLOYMENT NOTIFICATION (ARN) ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION
For the 2017-2018 school year, the Department of Human Resources is distributing Annual Reemployment Notifications (ARNs) electronically via Employee Self Service (ESS). This sustainability initiative is in accordance with School Board Policy 3-67, Section C.
From this point forward, all ARNs will be available in ESS to employees whenever needed. To access ESS and the ARN Internet Explorer must be used. At this time, other browsers like Google Chrome and Safari will not work. To access ESS, please copy and paste the following address into the Internet Explorer address field - https://www.vbcps.com/Apps/ESS/Pages/default.aspx. Once you have logged into ESS, you can find the ARN under Personal Information, Employment Notices.
Employees are asked to respond to the question at the bottom of the ARN indicating whether they will return to work for the 2017-2018 school year.
An email will be sent to all employees when the ARNs become available.
