A Message From the Principal - Mrs. Vanderveen
Winter is upon us,
This family connect newsletter is full of information regarding important information and resources for our families and students over the winter season. We know how stressful the Holidays can be for many of our students and want to provide them with all the support they may need. Along with their counselors, other resources for students and families are Daphne Powell, Student Support Advocate and Belen Espinoza, Parent Liaison.
First quarter grades were recently posted and sent home. If student's didn't see the grades they were hoping for, it is not too late to improve grades. Coming to school on-time and every day is a great way to improve grades. Other strategies include: communicating with teachers regularly, completing assignments on time, asking for help, utilizing after school tutoring, SIT time and the ASC. Be your own advocate and find our voice.
Every day is a great day to be a Marauder!
School Closures and Delays
School may be delayed or canceled because of weather conditions or other events. Bus routes may also be affected by unsafe travel conditions.
The announcement of a school closure or delay is usually made early in the morning. All authorized parents and guardians will receive a phone call and email if school is closed or delayed. If you have a mobile phone number on file with your child's school, you should also receive a text message.
Updated school closure and delay information will also be posted on the school district’s website, on the FlashAlert website, and the district Facebook page. If school is canceled, the school day will be made up later in the year. If bus routes are limited due to snow or ice on roadways, the alternate routes are listed on the transportation website.
In addition to the mass communication system, there are other options for receiving a text message in the event of a school closure or delay. When the school district announces a change in the schedule, it notifies the local TV and radio stations through a service called FlashAlert. You can receive a text message directly from FlashAlert whenever the school district posts a notice to that system. You can receive that service by signing up for FlashAlert Messenger. Many local TV and radio stations also offer similar services. Most of the major radio and television stations broadcast information about school closures.

Improving Grades
Tips to stay on top of your student’s grades
- Communicate with your student’s teachers as they can answer specific questions regarding your student’s grades and progress in their class. You can find their contact information on Qmlativ.
- Check the Parent Portal on Qmlativ for missing or current assignments and grades.
- Contact your student’s counselor if you have questions and/or concerns about credits and graduation.
- Encourage your student to access school resources such as the Academic Success Center, the Library, Tutoring, the ELL Homework Club, or one-on-one after school help from teachers. Remember we have an Activity Bus for students that stay after school with teachers or in clubs.
- Help your student take attendance seriously. Everyday matters!

News From the Career and College Readiness Center
Seniors:
Need $$$ for college? Fill out the FAFSA or WASFA online financial aid application.
You will use your 2021 taxes to complete the 2023-24 FAFSA or WASFA.
For helpful links, videos, and answers to FAQ’s, please refer to the financial aid link on our website. https://www.mukilteoschools.org/Page/4436
FAFSA (students with a social security #)
1. Start by creating an FSA ID. https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch
2. Complete the student section of the FAFSA. https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa
3. Parents create an FSA ID, upload their 2021 tax info with the “Data Retrieval Tool”, and complete the Parent section.
If your parent(s) are undocumented, there are a few things that will be different when completing the FAFSA.
1. You will enter zeroes for your parent(s) rather than a social security number or ITIN (i.e. 000-00-0000).
2. They will be unable to create an FSA ID for themselves.
3. Your parent will be unable to use the Data Retrieval Tool to upload their taxes. Therefore, you will just enter the tax information in manually.
4. You may get an "Error" message because you listed all zeroes for their SS#. Just continue to click "Next" until it advances you to the next page.
5. Rather than submitting your parents signature electronically, you will need to print out the signature page, have one of your parents sign it, and mail it to the address printed on the signature page.
WASFA (students without a social security #)
1. Go to the WASFA website. https://wsac.wa.gov/wasfa
2. Answer a series of questions to determine if you should complete the WASFA.
3. Fill out the WASFA application.

Stay Connected!
Information and news about Mariner High School are available in a variety of formats. This year, you will receive a phone message and email from the district if we close or delay school. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. As usual, school delays or closures will be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.
