The Clock from "There Will Come Soft Rains"
The clock from the short story symbolizes emptiness and repetition throughout the story by foreshadowing the absence of the people who live in that house. It builds suspense as the reader reads because the clock kept on singing and ticking repeatedly.
The House
The house itself symbolizes loneliness and individuality. The house was empty and stood by itself. It was like it was waiting for its turn to collapse like the others. It is also a symbol of cheerlessness. The house was also a symbol of development of technology. It was an artificially intelligent house that would do everything from preparing breakfast to reading poems at night.
The Dog
The dog was a representation of nature. It returns to the house after sickness. There is no sense of emotion in the story. The house sensed the dead dog and sent mice to clean up showing that it becomes easily disposable in our world.
