General News! Week of April 10- 14th
Happy Monday!
We would like to thank all the parents and students for helping make our Saturday Camp successful! We had a great turn out, and the students were ready to participate and learn, even if it was a Saturday morning! A quick reminder that the 2nd Saturday Camp has been cancelled, however, we are going to try to give students another extra opportunity for review at our Thursday afternoon camp.Students who would like to attend this week, should see the teacher they would like to review with for a permission slip. Thanks!
This week we have a very full schedule, so it is important that your child is here on time each day, and prepared to learn.

April 10, 2017
Dear Parents and Students:
On Thursday, April 13, SMMS will be hosting our first annual parent night to introduce S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to our parents and community. Students have been working diligently on Problem Based Learning units in their classrooms and have extraordinary information and projects to share. The parent night will begin at 6:00 pm and conclude at 7:00 pm. This event is not a drop in meeting. We have numerous activities, demonstrations, and information we would like to share with parents, so we ask that you please join us beginning at 6:00 pm.
S.T.E.M. competency will give our students the competitive edge when facing the uncertain job market in
today’s economy. Skills learned in S.T.E.M. classrooms connect their education and future training they may need to have a higher standard of living. Students are learning how to solve and tackle complex “real world” problems through engagement of PBL and S.T.E.M. We hope you are able to join us on Thursday for this exciting night.
Sincerely,
Angela B. McManigal

This week will be a little bit of everything. Today the students worked on their final poster for their rocket. The scale drawings they completed today will be displayed over their rockets on Thursday night so you can see what they have been working on. Tuesday we will be solving systems of equations and reviewing slope intercept form. Wednesday will be the Pythagorean theorem and perfect squares. Friday will start with a vocabulary review and reviewing parallel lines and transversals. Students should be working at home in IXL if possible, and they will have homework every night.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we are finishing our rocket design and construction! Tuesday, we will test our Center of Mass and learn the basics of using an altimeter to measure how high our rockets will be flying. Wednesday, we will engage in our first test launch! Thursday, please join us for parent night and see all of the cool things we have been doing with STEAM! Friday, we will be prepping for EOGs. Please make sure your child is working on Mobymax at home throughout the week to ensure completion of review topics. Let’s have another exciting week! J
Social Studies- Mr. Salser
This week we are changing gears. We will focus on prepping for the EOG test. We will cover everything we have covered in the classroom this year and focus on any weak areas the classes come across as we prepare for the test. Parents/Guardians you can help your child work on each nights review, keeping you child well hydrated (especially students involved in athletic activities during this time), and making sure your child gets 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Educational/Medical studies agree that following these three steps can help your child to be better prepared for classroom testing and school work.
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
This Week In Language Arts:
Last week we finished reading The Boy In The Striped Pajamas.I think that many students were moved by this story, and enlightened about this tragic time in history,We will be viewing the screenplay version during our testing week, and make some comparisons of the two versions.
This week we will continue reinforcing the skill sets that will be tested on during our 3 days of the ELA EOG. We will take another practice test this week, along with many small practice sessions on the smaller skill sets. We will use these to help identify both our strengths and weaknesses, as well as hopefully prevent some careless mistakes if the near future. We will also be reading and responding to a variety of passages while working on strategies to help eliminate and determine the best responses in a multiple choice response situation.
Homework for this week will continue to be using "SPOTLIGHT on Paired Passages"...this is a green workbook.(We are on Lesson #4 pgs. 48-51 for Monday.) It is necessary that the students have this with them on a daily basis, and are completing only the pages they have been asked to complete. The work assigned each night will be the practice necessary to complete the portion that will be a graded assessment of the assignment.
