Scholastic Writing Awards
Encourage your students in grades 7-12 to compete in more than 10 different categories, including poetry, critical essay, drama and flash fiction. Each entry is only $5 and can lead to both regional and national Scholastic Writing Awards. All Gold, Silver and Honorable Mention awardees are celebrated at Tan Tar-A Resort in the Ozarks (during the Write to Learn conference). Gold winners advance to the national competition. This year's deadline is January 5, 2018. Please help students complete the submission process in December before the break. Visit www.artandwriting.org to submit entries.
Also, teachers interested in being judges for the Missouri Region should sign up here. You will receive a $150 stipend for scoring, which can be done in person in Kansas City or remotely on Saturday, January 13.
2018 Summer Institute
It may be December, but we are already gearing up for the 2018 GWP Summer Institute!
In Summer 2018, we will offer two summer institutes—one at the UMSL main campus and one at our outreach site at Jefferson College--from June 4 - June 28. We will also be pairing this on-site 6-hour graduate class with another 12 hours of online and/or hybrid classes to finish out an 18-hour Graduate Certificate in the Teaching of Writing.
You are our best advertisement, so please share this flier far and near--and don’t forget about your content area colleagues! The summer institute is richer when we have cross grades (elementary-college) and cross discipline teachers. We appreciate any help you can provide in helping us spread the word!
Thanks for helping us build the next cadre of TCs!

Social Justice Opportunity for Teachers
Applications are now open for middle school, high school, and college faculty to attend The Olga Lengyel Institute (TOLI) Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education in New York City .
The seminar encourages teachers to think creatively and collaboratively about how they teach the Holocaust, genocide, and social justice. Prior experience teaching the Holocaust or focusing on social injustice in the classroom is required. Applicants should have at least five years' classroom experience and need to be at least five years from retirement.
All participants receive a fellowship of $350, free housing at Columbia University, and round-trip airfare. Local transportation and most meals will be provided by The Olga Lengyel Institute. Applications due Feb. 1, 2018. Click here for more details.
