A look at some of the highlights from the 2017-2018 school year
that make our schools a great place to learn, work, and connect
with the diverse community we share in Beaverton.
Throughout the year there have been many examples of students excelling in both academic and extracurricular activities. The following report is an example of some of the awards, scholarships, and accomplishments of students and staff in the Beaverton School District.
Stoller Middle School, Mithra Karamchedu, Stoller Middle School, Ian Rundle,
Meadow Park Middle School, Nishant Sane, Meadow Park Middle School, Vicky Siah, Stoller Middle School, and Pratik Vangal, Stoller Middle School.
Mithra Karamchedu, Stoller Middle School was named a finalist in the Broadcom MASTERS science competition and has been selected to represent the United States of America in the in the 2018 Broadcom MASTERS International Program for his project: Remote Sensing the Ablation or Accumulation of a Glacier By Using Fractal Analysis on Glacier Images. Mithra was awarded the Rising Star Award at the Competition.
The STEM 4 Girls team The Three Musketeers, comprised of Westview High School students, Nandhana Nixon, Ragini Dindukurthi, Namitha Nixon, was named the national winners of the ninth grade category of the U.S. Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) in its 15th annual eCYBERMISSION competition.
Annette Noratli, 6th-grade Humanities teacher at Meadow Park Middle School was named a 2017-2018 Civic Scholar by Representative Susan McLain, House District 29.
Jennifer Mohr-Colett, Music teacher at Fir Grove Elementary School was named a 2017-2018 Civic Scholar by Representative Sheri Malstrom, House District 27.
The Stoller Middle School Science Olympiad team, Grey Matter, won the Oregon State Championship for the 5th year in a row. They also placed 29th out of 120 at the national competition.
The Westview High School Marching Band won the Band Sweepstakes Award (Best in Parade) at the 2018 Grand Floral Parade.
The Aloha High School Marching Band won second place in the In-State Division A (99 members or Less) category at the 2018 Grand Floral Parade.
Sato Elementary, Vose Elementary and Mountainside High School all welcomed students and staff on the morning of Tuesday, September 5, 2017 thanks to the herculean efforts of Facilities, Maintenance and Custodial staff who completed final cleaning, unpacked and built furniture, and set up libraries, computer labs, offices and classrooms.
Palani, Harish, a senior at Sunset High School and Muhammad Rahman, a senior at Westview High School were named 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search Scholars.
Rahman was named one of 40 finalists, and subsequently won the 4th place $100,000 prize.
Muhammad Rahman, a senior at Westview High School, competed as a 2017 Siemens Competition Regional Finalist. Only 101 students out of 4,092 applicants were selected to move on to Regional Finals.
Westview High School junior, Divya Amirtharaj, won the Congressional App Challenge for Oregon’s First Congressional District with her app myVision.
Carlie Harris, Chemistry & Medical Intervention teacher and Doug Smith 9th grade Physics & Human Body Systems teacher at Health & Science School are the recipients of the 2017 Outstanding High School Classroom Teacher Award from the Oregon Science Teachers Association (OSTA).
The Aloha High School Automotive Technology Program was certified by the NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation.
Future Ready Team members Nichole Carter, Todd Frimoth, Steve Simpson, and Matt Hiefield presented about BSD's Week 3 Professional Development model at the National Title I Conference.
McKay Elementary School's cafeteria was ranked #2 in the School Leaders Now "13 School Cafeterias that are True Works of Art."
Kim Baker and Freda Stanton, Beaverton School District Assistive Technology Consultants presented an educational breakout session titled CIA: Agents of Change at the Assistive Technology Industry Association (ATiA) National Conference.
Three Westview High School students and one Southridge High School student presented as members of the Urban Minority Issues Panel at the opening ceremonies of the National Council of Urban Education Association's (NCEAU) annual conference.
Jeff Crapper, Biology and Medical Intervention teacher at HS2, has been
selected as a participant of the Association for Career and Technical Education's (ACTE) National Leadership Fellowship Program.
Southridge High School are a recipient of a $317,286 grant from the Oregon Department of Education to expand Career Technical Education opportunities within the area of Engineering and Computer Systems Information.
Calum Nguyen, a senior at Sunset High School, was awarded the Stand for Children 2017 Beat the Odds Scholarship. Watch his story below:
Southridge High School senior and percussionist, Nathan Coffman, won the 2017-2018 Portland Youth Philharmonic Concerto Competition and was the featured soloist at their third concert in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
Westview High School senior, Kelly Han, was selected as one of two Oregon delegates for the U.S. Senate Youth Program.
Beaverton High School junior, Cameron Monfared was awarded the City of Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission's Human Rights Award.
Divya Amirtharaj, junior at Westview High School, was named the Grand Prize winner of the Marvel Studios Thor Ragnarok Superpower of STEM Challenge held in Burbank, California.
Anna Nixon, a senior at Westview High School presented at TEDxSalem: Through the Looking Glass about her passion for STEM and starting her non-profit, STEM4Girls. Watch her talk below:

Awards:
- Acoustical Society of America - First Award of $1,500, plus student's school will be awarded $200, and mentor awarded $500.
- 2nd place in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines Category (Award is $1,500)

- 2nd place Cellular and Molecular Biology (Award is $1,500)

- GoDaddy Award - $3,000 Web Innovator Award
- NSA Research Directorate - Second "Science Security " Award of $1,000
- Oracle Academy - $5,000 for Outstanding Project in the Systems Software Category
- Drexel University - Full tuition Scholarship - $250,000
- 1st place in the Systems Software Category (Award is $3,000)

Dr. Susan Holveck, BSD Science Specialist, was recently awarded the Sigma Xi Columbia-Willamette’s Outstanding Teacher Award.
Beaverton School District students placed first in both the Elementary and High School levels of the Beaverton Human Rights Advisory Commission's Creative Expression Contest. In the Elementary School division, Sara Calderon, a third grade student at Aloha-Huber Park K-8, won First Place for her piece "Wall of Shame." In the High School division, Julia Hildebrandt, a junior at Sunset High School, won First Place for her piece "Finding the Gray."
Mia Barkenaes, a junior at the International School of Beaverton (ISB), was elected governor of the Pacific Northwest region of the Junior State of America (JSA), the nation’s largest student-led organization. Each year, JSA members across its 10 states elect one of their peers to serve as governor.
Anna, Namitha and Nandhanna Nixon, all students at Westview High School, placed 4th in the SourceAmerica National Design Challenge and recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to demonstrate how their device they engineered benefited employees with disabilities. Watch their video below:
Five Beaverton School District seniors were each awarded $1,500 scholarships from the Association of Beaverton School Administrators (ABSA) and one the Beaverton Minority Make a Difference Scholarship this month. Maite Tello, Health Science High School, Lehuanani Smith, Merlo Station High School, Martha Hernandez Carlon, Sunset High School, Mariella Mandujano, Southridge High School, Halle Velenchenko, Beaverton High School, David Chen, Sunset High School.
Aliyah Blattner a junior at Southridge High School has been selected for a 2018 Achievement Award in Writing, given by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Aliyah was recommended for the award by her Language Arts teacher, Natalie Ballard-Strauhal.
The Beaverton Arts Foundation has awarded nine scholarships to students in the Beaverton School District for outstanding performing or visual arts. The Beaverton School District Students awarded are:

* Jessica Xiao is also the recipient of the Southminster Presbyterian Celebration of Creativity Award.
Ben Chiu, a junior at Westview High School won first place in the international Math Kangaroo competition.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have grown during the last 90 years to become the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the nation’s largest source of scholarships for creative young artists and writers.

Dr. Danielle Hudson Executive Administrator for Student Services was named the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) Oregon Association of Central Office Administrators (OACOA) 2018 Achievement of Excellence Award winner.
Health and Science School seniors Simeon Florea, Mason Wichman, and Mazin Ashfaq, who were selected by the Oregon Chief State School Officer at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) as three of the five of Oregon’s nominations for the U.S. Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education for 2018.
The Stoller Middle School, Cedar Park Middle School and Meadow Park Middle School MATHCOUNTS teams were three of the top six ranking teams at the Oregon State Competition last month. Stoller Middle School ranked 1st for the seventh year in a row.

Congratulations to Transition teacher Steve Baer who was recognized by the Oregon Association of Vocational Support Needs Personnel (OACSNP) with their Excellent Teaching Award. The award recognizes individuals that inspire, educate, and empower transition across Oregon.
Aloha High School junior Allison Bonifacio's ceramics artwork, "Burn Victim," was selected for inclusion in the Annual National K-12 Ceramic Exhibition. There it will be seen by thousands of visitors from all over the world at the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The International School of Beaverton (ISB) has been ranked as the #2 High School in Oregon by U.S. News & World Report, and was awarded a gold medal. The School of Science and Technology was ranked #4 and was also awarded a gold medal.
Jasleen, a 4th grader at Springville K-8 was the winner in the elementary category. Alan, an 8th grader at Stoller Middle School was the winner in the secondary category.
Maureen Wheeler, District Public Communications Officer, was awarded the Oregon School Public Relations Association (OSPRA) Communicator of the Year Award.
Namrata Venkatesan, a seventh grader at Stoller Middle School placed second place at Oregon's Regional Spelling Bee presented by Pamplin Media Group last month.
Whitford Middle School 8th grader, Taylor Igarta was selected as one of 24 merit finalists in the Lions Clubs International Peace Poster Contest. The Beaverton Lions Club has sponsored Whitford Middle School’s participation in the annual contest.
Six Beaverton School District seniors were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program:

National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have
the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
Six Beaverton School District students were named National Merit College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship winners:
- Jacob Chvatal, Westview HS: Northeastern University University Scholarship
- Alexander Kenneth Shaw Dyall, Sunset HS: Oregon State University Scholarship
- Evan Hunter, Beaverton HS: New College of Florida Scholarship
- Aditya Jain, Westview HS: Boston University Scholarship
- Pratheek Makineni, Sunset HS: Case Western Reserve University Scholarship
- Kevin Sy, International School of Beaverton: Oregon State University Scholarship
Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program who plan to attend their institution. These awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.
