Standards Based Grading

Featuring Faculty Presenter Kate Owens

Join us for an exciting conversation!

Have you ever asked, or been asked, the following questions:

“Do students’ grades tell me whether they’ve actually learned?"

“What does an 85% really mean?”

“What percent do I need to make on the final exam to get an 82% in the class?"

This session will address those questions by providing an overview of standards based grading (SBG). SBG is based on the philosophy that grades should actually reflect what students have learned and mastered rather than serve as arbitrary measurements. While an implementation specific to Calculus II will be discussed, we will cover the “What,” “Why,” and “How” of SBG so the method outlined could be applied to courses in any discipline. If you’ve ever wondered about alternatives to traditional grading then this is a great place to start.
