A Culture of Literacy
The culture of literacy in our building is a vital part of our work to close this gap. One reason I am excited about the development of the Daily 5 at Audubon is that it provides a dramatic increase in the time our students read. Another piece that we are adding is providing students an opportunity to read during "down" time. Most classrooms ask students to read once they are finished with work, but we didn't really have a system for other areas like bathroom breaks. Last week Cory installed plastic mailboxes outside the primary and intermediate restrooms. We have provided magazines for each of those areas and purchased more to switch in and out. As you take students to the restroom and they are waiting in line or waiting for others to finish. Take advantage of those minutes for students to read. I realize that this is a small piece of the culture, but I believe it is one that will provide what our at-risk students need; more time to read.
Please know that some other changes to our culture of literacy are coming.
