Week 10, Term 1

Deputy Principal's Message

E mihi ana kia koutou katoa

Congratulations to those of you who won Easter Egg prizes from our raffle draw today. This was a great fundraiser and through all your efforts in selling tickets we raised just over $1,900. These funds will go towards STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts Mathematics) resources.

Term 1 is now complete and it’s a good time to reflect on the term that has been. Our staff and students have worked hard across all areas of learning and are most deserving of a well-earned break over the Easter and school holiday period. I am so proud of the way our students are demonstrating the value of growth by the end of this term. This was evident in the way they have settled into classroom routines, applied themselves to learning and didn’t give up and being part of a community who set high standards and are respectful towards others and the environment. I particularly noticed growth with students and teachers learning te reo Māori through using greetings, singing waiata and researching, writing and developing their pepeha (introduction about themselves) to present to others. I hope many are sharing these with their whānau at home. He karawhiua! (Give it heaps!) We aim to continue to grow ourselves further in term 2 and look forward to sharing this growth with you.

In the past week we welcomed our Mandarin Language Assistant (MLA) Boya Qin from Beijing, China. This is the first time an MLA has worked in Hautapu School since 2019. Each Monday and Tuesday Boya will visit classes to provide 45 minute lessons where students will learn Mandarin and be introduced to Chinese culture. This is a venture of the Confucius Institute in Auckland. It aims to promote and develop Chinese language programmes in New Zealand schools. Boya had a chance to visit the classes this week and meet the students. She is looking forward to starting her lessons next term.

At our assembly last week some of you may have met Daniel from Waikato University. Daniel is working alongside our staff to develop our ideas around teaching, learning and relationships in order to achieve success for all students. Your feedback as to what this looks like or could look like at Hautapu School is vital as we plan strategically for this. Thank-you to whānau who took the time to respond to Daniel’s two questions, we had some great responses from a whanau perspective:
