Tumbleweed Times Week 17
News from Ranch 25 - January 8, 2016
First Grade Happenings
In social studies we read about the African American holiday of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is celebrated over the seven days starting on December 26th and ending on January 1st. Each night a candle is lit in a kinara and one of the seven core principles is discussed: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, a sense of purpose, creativity, and faith
In math this week we first practiced solving equivalent equations. Some examples include: 5 + 3 = 6 + 2 and 1 + 8 = 12 - 3. The students worked on understanding how the equal sign is the center of the equation and that both sides must balance (be equal).
We also worked on using place value to solve problems with teen numbers. When solving a problem such as 15 + 4, first think of the 15 as 10 and 5. Then add 5 + 4 = 9, which is added to the 10. You will probably understand it better when you read the parent newsletter at this link . . . Math News: Grade 1, Module 2, Topic D.
It's 2016 and we have less than 100 days left of school.
Winter is Here
As evidenced by these terrific snowmen.
Be sure to say "Hi!" to our new student, Jett. You may remember him from Mrs. Battaglia's class last year.
