A Message From Mr. Nerby
Hello SBHS Family and Friends,
Happy December! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break and our students and families were able to enjoy the holiday and long weekend. As we swing into the holiday season and the winter months, I want to remind students to continue to take school seriously and arrive to each class on time. It is hard to believe, but quarter 2 progress grades will be out next week by December 8.
With progress reports coming in out next week, that means we are almost half way through second quarter already. Final exams will be held on January 12 and 13. These grades will be calculated into GPA for all students. It is important that students are ready and prepared for their semester exams. That Thursday and Friday will also be early release days for students after their exams each day.
Thursday, January 12
- Block 1 & 2 Exams
- Buses depart and regular end of day time
Friday, January 13
- Block 3 & 4 Exams
- Buses depart at noon
The holiday season brings many winter activities as well. Please look throughout this newsletter to find information about our Band and Choir Winter Concert Dates as well as our Winter Athletic sports schedule.
And finally, it is obvious that the weather has started to turn and we are now full swing into our winter months. As such, I want to remind our families and students about the importance of being prepared for the cold and snow. For students who drive, please remind them to leave in plenty of time to take into account for snow covered or slick roads. For students that wait for the bus or walk to school, please remind them to bundle up and dress appropriately. We want to ensure everyone arrives and stays safe for school each morning and afternoon.
As always, please reach out with any questions and I wish you all a happy holiday season!
All my best,
Keith Nerby
Principal

Winter Sports Update!
Winter sports time has arrived to head inside to watch the games on the court, wrestling on the mats, the boys DCU swim team in the pool, and the dance team doing their flips on the gym floor.
Girls and Boys basketball teams have started their season opener games vs non-conference teams and will begin conference play during the first week back from the Thanksgiving break. Our teams have both started the young season off with their first wins with varsity head coach Casey Harrington in his second year running the girls program and Rodney Owens in his first year as varsity head coach for the boys program.
The Boys DCU swim team also has a new head coach in Erin Peterson. Erin is very excited to build upon the success of the program and carry on the strong tradition of excellence from the four mainland county schools that makeup the DCU Boys swim team.
The SBS (Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol Co-op) Wrestling team will look to compete with male and female wrestling teams for the 2022-23 wrestling season. Co-Head coaches Stephen Jacobson and veteran Coach Trevor Hasenjager are very excited for the upcoming winter season that begins this Saturday at the Kimberly High School Invitational.
The Dance Team has been working hard on their dance routines and Coach Jen Propsom is excited for the dance team with their halftime dance routines of our scheduled basketball games and dance competitions ending with the regionals and state competition on February 3.
Looking forward to an exciting season and Go Clippers!

SBHS Band News
The choir students enjoyed caroling for the Unwrapping Sturgeon Bay event. The group sang carols up and down Third Avenue and enjoyed the fun and festive atmosphere. The band students performed from the buses due to the cold weather for the Sturgeon Bay Christmas Parade but still had fun doing what we love, making music. The band will be out on Third Avenue by Door County Candy between 1 and 2:30 on Saturday, December 3rd. A contingency of the band will also perform at Dinner with Santa hosted by the Lion's Club at Corpus Christie in the evening on December 3rd. The music department loves making the season bright with music.
We have upcoming concerts in the high school auditorium beginning at 7 p.m. on the following dates:
Monday, December 5
- Middle School Bands
Tuesday, December 13
- Sunrise Elementary - in the HS gym at 6:00 p.m.
Monday, December 19
- High School Bands
Thursday, January 12
- High School Choirs
Bay Area Music Association Honor Band is scheduled for Saturday, January 21 at Denmark High School. Students from our high school will rehearse with area music students throughout the day and perform a concert that is free to the public at 4:00 p.m.
Band Fruit Sale Delivery Day:
Band Fruit comes in on Wednesday, December 7th. If you ordered band fruit, please bring cash or check to the TJ Walker Middle School Gym between noon and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7th. Band students will be available to help you carry out to your car. Thank you for supporting our band program through this sale. Proceeds help cover accompanist expenses for solo-ensemble, curricular travel for the band, scholarships for lessons and camps and other non-budgeted needs for the program.
Thank You from the Band:
Thank you to Tadych's MarketPlace Foods for allowing the band to bag groceries and earn some extra funds for our next Florida trip slated for March 2026.
Thank you to Kobussen Busses for their help in making our parade work out with playing from the buses.
Band Jimmy John's Fundraiser:
You can help the band on December 14th (11 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.) by ordering a sandwich from Jimmy John's. All you have to do is order lunch or dinner and mention that you are ordering to help the band program. Please call Mrs. Hintz if you would like a flyer to put up at your workplace or to share with friends and family. Jimmy John's is donating $1 per sandwich ordered that day!!

From SBSD Food Service: New Cold Brew Coffee Program
During the month of November, a coffee program was brewed between food service and Sturgeon Bay High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter members.
Students decided to focus, at least initially on only a cold brew coffee service. We determined that cold brew coffee service was a beverage most every high school student drinks regardless of the season, cold brew has a lower startup cost, and the brewing process was more simplistic than hot coffee. FBLA and food service share in the profit of each cold brew coffee sold. FBLA provides staffing and marketing of the program; food service provides sanitary production, product supplies and administration.
The food service department is absorbing the cost of each school breakfast for as long as possible. In high school, students can select a cold brew as part of their breakfast (because 8 oz. of milk is included in the brew and milk is part of a reimbursable meal item), in turn students can have a cold brew AND a breakfast for free. By mid-December we will be featuring coffee roasted in Sturgeon Bay! The beans are roasted by Sean Grorich owner of Pinky Promise Coffee Roasting shop on Madison Ave.
Encourage your student to drive to school for their coffee and breakfast!
