Putting a Mission into Motion
How do we support others who are working at the edge?
As I begin to answer this question, I am reminded of one of my favorite lines from the movie Zootopia. Zootopia is an animated movie about a small rabbit named Judy Hopps, who chases her dream of joining the police force in the city of Zootopia. At the start of the film, Judy’s parents, Bonnie and Stu Hopps do not see a reason for Judy’s big dreams because no rabbit has ever been a police officer. In efforts to deter her from this goal, Stu says to Judy: “See? That’s the beauty of complacency, Judy. If you don’t try anything new, you’ll never fail!”
Although a comical statement in the movie, many of us live this very sentiment daily. We play it safe, find ways to get it right, and work never to make (or at least admit) mistakes. You see, that is the beauty of complacency; it feels good. Complacency keeps you in your comfort zone, and your comfort zone is a beautifully pleasant place where nothing grows.
Working at the edge requires us to move out of our comfort zone. Change is difficult: learning is not always easy. As we push ourselves and others to the edge, we must stand alongside them in support. While supporting, we must get in touch with the emotions that are created as people become uncomfortable. Our students and colleagues need to feel valued and supported in the struggle. We must emotionally walk with others as they push to the edge. We will challenge them intellectually, and in turn, must support them emotionally. People must know that we care more about them more than their actions. Showing this concern is about you and your actions, not about others and their actions (or reactions).
If we want to support others who are working at the edge, then we must stand alongside them with the emotional support needed.
More to come next week -- keep working to put our mission into motion! #FlyAsOne

There are vital differences in brain function when students are working with their learning brain versus their survival brain. Many students how have experienced trauma spend a great deal of their time in the survival brain. We have to work to find ways to provide safety, connection, and support to help move them to the learning brain. WATCH NOW
