Minute Health Tips
from Lifestyle Medicine Solutions
It’s coming. The time of year where the candy bowl runneth over and dominates the aisles of the grocery store right on into our living rooms and workplaces. Living a healthy life would be great if you could just live in a cave and not have to deal with the temptations of the world around you, right?
Dr. Brian Wansink is a professor and director at the Cornell University Food and Brand Lab. In his book “Slim by design”, his deal is really all about strategy. We think that making good choices is all about willpower, but Wansink’s theory is that if you change your surroundings you are much more likely to succeed. His book is full of tips and strategies for making the right choices at home, in the workplace, as well as the grocery store.
So let’s talk about some tips on how to keep your hand out of the candy bowl for the next couple months and beyond. Wansink found that "the average office worker had 476 calories worth of food in their desk within arm's reach." For your workplace, ditch the snacks in or on your desk and move them out of sight if you can. If you need to have a candy dish at your desk, try to fill it with something you don’t like very much so it’s not that much of a temptation for you. Moving it a few feet away can actually reduce consumption by half.
For halloween candy, have you ever heard of a candy buyback? Many local dentists will give you coupon books or money in exchange for your candy and then send it to the troops overseas. Check out the link to find one near you.
Try to keep healthy things easily accessible and visible. Buy a veggie tray and keep it at eye level so at the end of the day when you just want to reach for something convenient, it's right there waiting for you. Create a shopping list that's at least half fruit and vegetables.
Here's the bottom line, we go for what's convenient- so look for ways to make eating healthy convenient for you this season. Eat a salad or load your plate up with veggies so that you are filling up the foods you need before you the foods you want. These may seem like small changes, but small changes over time have the potential to reap great rewards.
