D. W. Daniel High School
October 2023 Newsletter
Message from the Principal
D.W. Daniel High School,
Students are digging deep as they take on an ever-increasing load of complex work that ranges from solving one-step equations to discovering improved methods of crushing Carbon 60 atoms. The learning occurring each day at D.W. Daniel High School is profound. Our kids, and the teachers who guide them, are truly amazing. There is no place quite like a public high school where we get to witness the growth of young people each day.
As we begin October and pass the first-quarter mark, please encourage your student to take the time to enjoy this moment in their life. High school can be hard, as young people are growing into the adults they will become. At the beginning of the school year, I asked each class to take care of each other, to watch out for friends, to create a community of caring. Each day we get to see numerous examples of our students building a vibrant culture of caring.
As students finish their midterms and begin the second quarter, please check on them and let them know you are listening. Daniel High School is always here to support them.
Serve EACH Student; Take Care of People!

RiSE
In collaboration with the City of Clemson, the RiSE Environmental Club initiated its first-semester project aimed at the evaluation of biodiversity in urban forests via tree inventories. This endeavor was initiated by RiSE officers (Savannah Cato, Samprokshana Karthikeyan, Trev Pyles, Hallie Ray, and Henna Sekhon) who conducted two informative sessions to introduce the objectives and scope of the project to club members. RiSE plans to conduct a tree inventory on a specified parcel of land, evaluate its benefits, and identify biodiversity needs in the tree canopy. The project will culminate in improving biodiversity by acquiring and planting needed tree specimens.
On Wednesday, September 28th, Hallie and Samprokshana participated in a training session conducted by the City of Clemson’s Tony Tidwell, Director of Urban and Park Land Management, and Tyler Jones, Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst. The group discussed the importance of tree inventories to the urban forest management plan, identified potential variables to measure, and learned to use the GIS inventory software.
The RiSE Environmental Club wishes to extend its sincere gratitude to Tony Tidwell and Tyler Jones for their collaboration and support. We appreciate the time they are taking from their busy schedules to share their expertise and facilitate this unique learning opportunity.
RiSE looks forward to contributing to and enhancing our community’s urban forest.
Please see Ms. Tidwell in Room 339 for more information.
AFJROTC
The “Flying Lions” Cadet Corps at Daniel High School has had a busy and successful week!
On Saturday the unit’s Raiders Team competed in a challenging Raiders competition with sixteen other highly touted upstate JROTC teams. The Daniel men’s team ended up taking 3rd place overall, clocking a personal-best team time in the annual Liberty Raiders Red Devil Gauntlet. Raiders competitions are physically demanding obstacle-course/problem-solving competitions completed on a running clock over a course that may range from three to five kilometers. The team consisted of Team Captain Jackson Dodson, Zoie Klugo, Nolan Greenberger, Ethan Holder, Kyle Stevens, Parks Canipe, Scott Doyle, Joseph Liu, and Ayad Pena.
Then on Wednesday the “Flying Lions” provided a marching Color Guard for the Daniel Homecoming Parade in downtown Central. This inaugural event saw not only outstanding group participation but an extremely large and supportive crowd. The Color Guard was commanded by Cadet Lilly Beckner and consisted of Beckner, Allison Thackery, Naomi Myers, and Matthew Smith.
On Thursday AFJROTC Cadets were invited to participate in a demonstration of an Army National Guard simulator at Pickens High School. Cadets were able to observe and participate in simulations depicting the many roles the Army National Guard plays in national defense, search and rescue operations, and natural-disaster-response situations.
Finally, on Friday Daniel cadets participated in homecoming activities by providing the Color Guard for the National Anthem before the game, as well as providing the ceremonial Saber Arch at halftime for the procession of the homecoming court.
The Daniel High School SC-941 “Flying Lions” cadet corps remains committed to “One Daniel” and will continue to be active in competitions, community service, and Daniel High School activities.
Recent Field Trip to Walhalla
On September 15th some Daniel High students visited the Museum of the Cherokee in Walhalla. The students enjoyed learning about the Cherokee villages that existed in our area and viewing artifacts that have been found locally.
