Kaya Parents and Staff

As NAIDOC Week fell during the school holidays, over the past two weeks each of the classes has been immersed in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies. To put things into some sort of perspective, Jesus was on earth approximately 2000 years ago which is certainly a great length of time. The first evidence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders peoples in Australia was 60,000 years ago, 30 times since the birth of Jesus. This amazing culture deserves a prominent place in our schools and our community. Mrs Mack has set up some wonderful displays in the Library which highlight aspects of this amazing culture and an outline of some the work that the children have been completing is included in the newsletter today.

Last weekend our Year Six students continued their journey towards receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation by making a public commitment in front of the church congregation on either Saturday evening or Sunday morning. When invited by Fr Quynh, the students read the following pledge:

As I prepare for the Sacrament, I will try to join with the parish community by attending Mass. I will use the skills and gifts God has given me to help build a community of peace.

Parents also made a pledge in support of their children:

We commit ourselves to share fully in this preparation programme, as we work together with staff and our child, for a deeper appreciation of the Sacrament they are to receive.

We ask the Notre Dame Parish Community to pray for our children and us, so that we may all be one, as we build the Kingdom of God on earth.

I think the main element of this pledge is about using their God given skills and gifts. We are all born with a range of talents but whether these are realised rests upon each of us to, firstly, acknowledge them, then to ensure that we actively strive to develop them. We don’t necessarily receive the same gifts in the same measure but, without actively working to incorporate them into our lives, we are not reaching our potential. Please continue to pray for our students that they not only realise their talents but actively develop them so they become the best that they can be.

Our wonderful P&F have been nominated as a finalist in the Building Positive School Communities section of the Catholic School Parents Western Australia Awards. The Award Presentation Evening is Friday 5 August and I hope our P&F is chosen as the winner as they are truly deserving of this recognition. Please follow the link below if you would like to support our P&F at the Presentation Evening.

During the recent school holidays, Emily Guerinoni became engaged to Chris Beattie. Chris and Emily have recently purchased a block of land and it was here that Chris chose to propose. Such a wonderful way to begin their life journey together on the land where they plan to build their home.

Congratulations to our Cross Country team who managed a very creditable Fourth place in the Interschool Carnival this morning. There were many excellent results with all children giving their best effort for our school. Mr Webb will have all of the results in next week’s newsletter.

Term 3 looks set to be a busy but exciting term! Edu-Dance has commenced and next week we will participate in our Class Liturgy. PPM have their Assembly in Week 4, we also get to participate in our very first Athletics Carnival and in between all this fun stuff we will be learning lots of new things!

This term we are starting to learn about digraphs. Last week we started off by learning the ‘sh’ sound. This week we are exploring the ‘ch’ sound. Sentence writing will become a focus this term. We will start to understand how to write on a line, use finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. We will be looking at lots of different Fairy Tales. Last week we started with The Three Little Pigs – we are very good at retelling the story.

We started the term off by revising all of the mathematical concepts that we learnt about last term – addition, subtraction, patterns and money. This term, we are starting off by learning about half and whole and then moving on to explore volume and more and less. We continue to be counting superstars and are looking forward to learning lots more mathematics concepts!

In Integrated this term, we are very busy celebrating lots of exciting events. This week is NAIDOC Week, so we are completing collaborative artwork. As the term progresses, we will be completing activities around the Commonwealth Games, as well as learning about the place we live in and the different important landmarks around the world.

All students who choose to dress up their bike, scooter or shoes will receive a small prize, a raffle ticket, stickers and a piece of fruit. Larger prizes will then be raffled out towards the end of the day. Students will also be given the opportunity to participate in an obstacle course during school time (12.40pm - lunch time).
