Take friendship seriously
Reanne Bourgeous-period 6/7
Analysis of the Development of Theme
Max didn't care much about his relationship with Kevin. Most of the time he would take it for granted. Very slowly, he cared more and more. He was still mostly concentrating on feeling bad for himself. Calling himself things like stupid, and butt-head. It took him a while, but now he really loved having Kevin as a friend. There was only one problem. All that time that Max had spent feeling bad for himself, was a waste of his time with Kevin. He didn't realize that until he got up one morning, to hear that his best friend is dead.
Reflection and Application of Theme
I strongly agree with the theme. The author did great with the theme. I think so because it apply's to our every day life. It is universal and apply's to everyone. I've had a few friends who have taken our friendship for granted. It made me feel bad. It encouraged me to not be a friend like that. I think we've all had friends like that before.
Symbols
Dictionary
Freak always carried around a dictionary. It was a big part of who he was. It also was and is to this day a big part of what Max remembers freak by. "Freak and his dictionary". He would look up any words he doesn't know. He tought max how to use a dictionary too. I think this would be an important symbol in the story.
Max's Mother
Max loved his Mom a lot. He hasn't been the same since his Dad killed her. Max in general is a pretty negative person. But I think that losing his Mom was a lot of it. Having Freak as a friend helped him to not feel as lonely without his Mom. He lives with his Grandparents. They treat him really well because they know how hard it would be to lose a great Mom.
School
Max struggled in school. He had to have lots of special help in order to get good grades. Kevin(Freak), teachers, the principal, and many others work very hard to help him. A lot of it, is he doesn't try. He has so many other things on his mind. I think this is a good symbol to point out. It's a universal topic. Lots of people today struggle with school.
