FROM THE PRINCIPAL
May 1, 2023
Silver Lake Families,
This month we were thrilled to be able to celebrate our wonderful volunteers who help make Silver Lake a special place for students. Some of these caring adults regularly volunteer to visit classrooms to support teachers and students. Other opportunities for volunteering your time include field trips (by grade level), evening events (STEAM Night or Multi-cultural Night), or PTA events (see below). If you would like to be a Silver Lake volunteer, please see our amazing office staff, Nam and Lori, for details on how you can apply. All applications go through this link on the district website, but this process can be a bit confusing, so please don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance.
The SLE PTA recently shared information regarding how you can volunteer to help out with PTA sponsored events (see the SLE PTA website or ask your child’s teacher). Please know that even just 30 minutes of your time makes a HUGE difference and truly positively impacts the lives of our students! There’s no minimum time commitment required for volunteers at these events. Recently we had an excellent turnout on April 14th for the PTA sponsored Glow Dance and many people volunteered to cover shifts at the concession stands, with hallway supervision, etc. This included many Silver Lake staff members joining in the fun (see photos below).
One additional reminder from the current PTA Board:
2023-2024 PTA BOARD POSITIONS OPEN: We currently have no elected officers and no nominees for our PTA Board next year. If you weren’t already aware, this means that as of today we have NO OPERATING PTA AT OUR SCHOOL FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR. This means there will not be anybody to plan and finance events and programs like Bingo, school dance, yearbook, or even teacher grants to help your staff provide the best learning experience possible for your student. If we do not have a Board of Directors next year, PTA (a legal, non-profit organization that requires a Board of Directors to operate) will no longer be able to operate at SLE. Please help us avoid this. Volunteering as a member of the Board of Directors for SLE is easy, fun, and fulfilling. Contact us today for more information about the four main Board seats - President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. All positions come with training from WA State PTA and your outgoing Board will always be available for questions. Please, help us continue operating PTA in our school! For more information contact us or check out www.silverlakepta.weebly.com.
Just as a reminder, in May we are hosting two more Silver Lake family engagement events. Please consider attending:
- STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) Night: 5/11 (6:00-7:00)
- Multi-cultural Night: 5/25 (5:45-7:15)
In partnership,
Silver Lake Principal, Theresa Campbell

ATTENDANCE
Silver Lake Elementary School, in partnership with families and community, is dedicated to preparing each student for academic, social, and personal success through individualized, relevant, rigorous, aligned, and engaging instruction through the lens of equity. We are continuing our partnership with families to make sure that all students are at school, on time, every day. Did you know that if your child misses more than 18 days in a given school year that this is chronic absenteeism? Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Here are some tips to increase your child’s attendance:
- Set a regular bedtime and morning routine
- Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before
- Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
- Try scheduling medical appointments and extended trips when school isn’t in session
- If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.
STATE TESTING at SLE
We would like to notify you about the testing window for the upcoming SBA assessment. Grade 3 will be tested on May 2, 9, 16, and 23. Grade 4 students will take SBA on May 3, 10, 17, and 24. Grades 5 testing is scheduled on April 27, May 4, 1,, 18, and 25. The students are going to use headsets provided by the district and school. Please, make sure that your child’s device provided by the district is fully charged every day.
State testing is required by state law (RCW 28A.230.095(link is external)) and federal law (Elementary and Secondary Education Act).
Statewide testing is important because it helps ensure all public school students receive a quality education, no matter where they go to school, because they are measured to equal standards. This information assists districts and schools in improving instructional practices and curriculum and gives families valuable information about how their student is doing in school and where additional help might be needed.
Test results are one piece of information about how your student is doing in school. Together with report cards and other information, test results let you know if your student is on track to succeed in higher grades as well as for college and career. For students in grade 10, these results are used by some community colleges in Washington to measure if students are on track for college-level classes.
You can help your child be ready for testing by:
- Marking the testing dates on your calendar (see the calendar below) and planning your preparations;
- Ensuring your child gets a good amount of sleep the night before the test;
- Having your student eat a nutritious and filling breakfast;
- Ensuring your student is on time on the day of testing;
- Setting a backup alarm to avoid the possibility of oversleeping;
- Contacting the school right away if your child is sick on the day of testing.
Мы хотели бы уведомить наши семьи, что в апреле-мае 2023 ученики 3, 4, и 5 классов будут сдавать гос экзамен на математики, природоведения и чтения.
Вы можете помочь вашему ребенку следующим образом:
- Знать даты тестирования вашего ребенка;
- Убедиться, чтобы ребенок хорошо отдохнул и выспался накануне теста;
- Накормить плотным завтраком;
- Привезти детей во время в школу;
- Marque las fechas de las pruebas en su calendario (vea el calendario preparado a continuación) y planifique sus preparativos;
- Asegúrese de que su hijo duerma bien la noche anterior a la prueba;
- Hacer que su estudiante coma un desayuno nutritivo y abundante;
- Asegurarse de que su estudiante llegue a tiempo el día de la prueba;
- Configurar una alarma de respaldo para evitar la posibilidad de quedarse dormido;
- Comunicarse con la escuela de inmediato si su hijo está enfermo el día de la prueba.
WHAT HOLIDAYS DO YOU OBSERVE?
Everett Public Schools is rich in culture with a diverse community that represents and speaks over 90 different languages. We are a school district committed to embracing every one of our community partners' experiences, culture, beliefs, and traditions. To reflect and honor this diversity, we are working on creating a formal calendar to recognize and spread awareness about religions and cultures within our district for our students, staff and community.
We have also identified dates as High Impact Observances that may impact student learning due to religious or cultural observances (EX: student absences, inability to participate in school events, etc.). Our schools get regular communication reflecting these dates so they may do their best to accommodate students who may need support during these times.
We are different, we are the same. Let’s learn more about what makes us unique! Visit to learn https://www.everettsd.org/diversityequityinclusion more.
FROM THE COUNSELOR
We are nearing the end of the year but still focused on learning! I had the pleasure of coordinating our very first Career Day for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. They attended various presentations by local community members that spoke about their careers. We had a veterinarian, a physical therapist, a firefighter, a police officer, and nurses join us! Students were fully engaged and asked so many great questions! We enjoyed this day so much!
Going forward, I will be visiting 1st and 2nd grade classrooms to teach the Committee for Children’s unit on Bullying Prevention. Your students will learn skills to Recognize, Refuse, and Report about bullying. You can access these lessons by going to Secondstep.org and using the Activation Key below. It is important to have conversations at home about what your student is learning.

Come and be part of our Multicultural night event!
May 25th, 5:45 -7:15
In the past years we’ve had parents set up a table and bring a traditional dish or game from their country and share with our Silver Lake Community, while we enjoy multicultural dances and music performances. That gives us an opportunity to learn about other cultures and have fun! Set up at 5:30 PM on the day of the event.
Please reach out to Veronica (vbenitez@everettsd.org) or Melody (Mborcherding@everettsd.org) for any further questions.
If you would like to help plan the Multicultural Night, please come to help us on May 2nd, from 5:00 - 6:30 in the SLE library. Please bring a snack to share. You can bring your children.
