Dear Fulton Families,


I hope that you had a nice weekend and were able to grab a cup of apple cider or hot chocolate. The weather has changed and it is definitely time to layer up! If you are like my husband, you probably enjoyed watching some college football. We were a little disappointed in the Penn State outcome, we just knew it would be a little more of a game. Oh well, hopefully next week!


I hope you are able to join us at our FES Coffee House this Wednesday, November 4th from 8:00am-9:00am. Administration will be available to answer any questions you may have. Be sure to roast your coffee or perk your tea, drop in and ask any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you at our FES Coffee House. As a reminder we have no school tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3rd due to elections and on Friday, November 6th we have early dismissal. Please view the FES Early Dismissal Schedule to see what your child's schedule will be for the day. Also, PTA is partnering with Galliano Restaurant for a fundraiser tomorrow from 11:00am-9:00pm. Reviewing your Child's Grades for Unsubmitted Assignments

We have 1 week remaining in the 1st quarter. Can you believe it?!?!? This is a great time to review your child’s grades in Canvas. Please follow the directions below to access your child's grades in Canvas as well as gain an awareness of the impact of any unsubmitted assignments on your child’s grades, if he or she has any.


To view all of your child’s grades in one place, sign into Canvas and before entering any individual course, scroll down to Grades on the far left side. This will bring up a list of your child’s current grades in all courses in which he or she is enrolled. This view provides a quick snapshot, and also highlights whether the course is being graded quarterly or by semester this year. Note: Related Arts and Health grades will be graded semesterly.

To get a closer look at your child’s grades in each individual course, click on the course you are interested in and this will provide you a detailed account of his/her grades.

Note: The Canvas gradebook defaults to calculating grades based only on the assignments that have been graded in that course. The grade you see for each course should reflect only what your child has turned in; which is circled in red below.

To see what your child's grade would be if he or she did not turn in any unsubmitted work, uncheck the blue box next to Calculate based only on graded assignments. In this example, Tanisha Burk's grade changed from a 98.61% (image above) to a 77.1% (image below) if Tanisha does not turn in any unsubmitted work.

If you have questions about specific assignments or grades, please contact your child’s teacher. Teachers will accept any unsubmitted assignments for the first quarter through the end of the student day, 12:45pm, on Friday, November 6.

Google Play Parent Opt-In

In an effort to continue expanding our authorized set of digital tools for virtual instruction, HCPSS has curated a new set of supplemental digital tools that are available only through Google’s menu of additional services. These supplemental digital tools are approved by HCPSS and comply with federal, state and Howard County Board of Education student data privacy policies. Due to Google’s settings, students must access this set of tools by utilizing Google’s menu of additional services, which requires consent by a parent or guardian.


To provide consent:

  1. Log in to HCPSS Connect.

  2. Select More Options from the left panel.

  3. Select HCPSS Google Menu from the middle of the page.

  4. Click the check box to provide consent. Changes are saved automatically.


A parent or guardian must provide consent for each student by selecting the student’s name at the top of the page.


The digital tools currently included are: Book Room, Word Work, Scratch BluBot, Scratch JR, Sketch-Up, Collector Classic, JamBoard, Google Earth and Minecraft: Education. After a parent/guardian provides consent, students using a HCPSS Chromebook can access the tools through the Google Play Store icon on the Chromebook when logged in with an HCPSS account. There may be a delay of up to three days before the apps appear in the Google menu and some tools may automatically appear on the Chromebook once consent is provided by a parent or guardian without the need to install them. If your child has not been issued a Chromebook, please make the request following the information found online.


Please note:

  • HCPSS cannot guarantee that apps are available on devices other than HCPSS Chromebooks.

  • Teachers may or may not choose to use any or all of these apps during instruction. Students will be notified when a particular app will be used for instruction.

  • If you do not provide consent for your student’s access to these digital tools, your student’s teacher will provide alternative enrichment activities.

  • In addition to these Google tools, HCPSS has approved a robust set of supplemental digital tools. Your child’s teacher will notify you of the particular supplemental digital tools being used in each class via email or on their Canvas course page.

HCPSS Invites Stakeholder Input on the School Resource Officer Program

The Howard County Public School System invites students, parents and guardians, staff members and community stakeholders to share their input about the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program in HCPSS schools. Feedback about the program may be provided by emailing SROinput@hcpss.org. All messages will be reviewed; however, due to the anticipated volume, individual responses should not be expected. The feedback provided will inform HCPSS' ongoing review of the roles, purpose and outcomes of SROs in Howard County schools. An update was presented at the October 22, 2020 Board meeting.

3rd & 5th Grade CogAT Testing


Each year, Howard County Public School System administers the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to all students in grades 3 and 5. The CogAT is a group-administered abilities test that measures students’ reasoning abilities, which they develop through in-school and out-of-school experiences. It is not designed to test a student’s academic achievement, but their potential. The Gifted and Talented Education Program uses the data from the CogAT as one criterion for placement into fourth grade Gifted/Talented mathematics classes and middle school Gifted/Talented content classes.


As a result of the current school closure, the 3rd and 5th grade administration of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will shift from the traditional December window to a later date. Although the CogAT administration may be delayed, identification of students for placement in GT classes will occur in February and March using all available performance and assessment data in accordance with Maryland COMAR for Gifted and Talented Education.


We will communicate any additional information as it becomes available.

Worth Repeating

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES- SAVE THE DATES!!!

Beginning November 13th families will have the opportunity to schedule a conference with their homeroom teacher with a focus on language arts. Teachers who solely teach Gifted and Talented Math (i.e., Mrs. Friedman and Mrs. Kanter) will meet with families of the 4th grade math students this semester. They will meet with the families of the 5th grade math students in the 2nd half of the year. Mrs. Borowy will meet with her Language Arts Students in the fall and her Gifted and Talented Math students the second half of the year. Related arts will have open office hours for any questions you may have, and that schedule will be shared closer to conferences. All of our conferences will be virtual and each teacher will develop their own schedule between the dates of Monday, November 23rd and Wednesday, November 25th; as such not all teachers may be available for all dates and times. More information will be sent out closer to November 13th about how to schedule a conference.


The first marking period ends on November 6th and report cards are issued on November 16th.

SPRING SEMESTER PLANNING- BOE Meeting this Thursday!

Central Office will present a hybrid model for the Board’s consideration on November 5, and the Board is scheduled to take action on the second semester instructional model on November 19.


On Thursday, October 22 Central Office shared with the BOE metrics that would allow us to safely return to school buildings and criteria that would be used to signal the need to revert to a virtual model. Superintendent Martirano’s preliminary remarks and the full presentation are available online.


Additionally, we heard from many of you that the initial community survey lacked an opportunity for you to add comments, ask questions, etc. Like Fulton, Central Office, values your input- as such, they have created a new email option for parents/guardians, students, staff and other stakeholders who wish to provide input and feedback to the Board regarding the spring semester instructional model. Please email feedback to spring-input@hcpss.org. The Board will review all emails; however, due to the anticipated volume, individual responses should not be expected.

Battle of the Books- Calling all 5th grades, you have a week left to sign up!

We are excited to partner with the Howard County Public Library and Howard County Public Schools to promote reading, teamwork, vocabulary and good sportsmanship through the Battle of the Books. This year the event will be presented in a virtual format and we have shared this information with all 5th grade students during their media class!

  • Teams of 3-5 students and one adult coach each read the same 11 pre-determined books.
  • Students must have a coach that will be responsible for registration and attending the mandatory meetings.
  • Thanks to generous sponsors, all teams receive a set of books. In addition, copies of each year's titles are available for borrowing at the Howard County Library System.
  • More information about how the virtual event will run are forthcoming.
There will be a general informational Zoom meeting offered on October 20, 2020 2019 at 7pm.
