It's Survey Time!
We're adding a second survey this year called our mid-year check-in. This will allow us to hear from families about what's going well and what improvements can be made. Your feedback is critical, so we hope you'll take a few minutes and let us know your thoughts. We'll use the information to make any necessary adjustments and keep doing our best to improve the experience for students and families continually.
Attendance Awareness Campaign
Did you know that students who miss 15 minutes of school each day lose 1.25 hours of instruction weekly, one full day per month, and eight days a year? Attendance matters!
Crook County School District is dedicated to improving academic achievement and student outcomes by focusing on the basics: reading, writing, and math. Only 67% of our local students show up at least 90% of the time. There's a direct correlation between attendance and achievement. Students who are chronically late or absent through 6th grade are less likely to graduate high school.
Our district will encourage families to prioritize consistent attendance for the rest of the school year. And we're here to support you! Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions or need help making your child's school experience the best it can be.
Pioneer High School Celebrates New Building
Pioneer High School celebrated the official opening of its new building with an official ribbon cutting. Thanks to our partners Prineville Chamber for hosting the event!
The 9,500sf building is located next to the CCHS campus. It offers six classrooms dedicated to core classes, Career & Technical Education, credit recovery, counseling services, a GED testing center, and a kitchen. Students and staff officially moved on December 5th, and the response to the new facility has been overwhelmingly positive.
The project's estimated cost is $4.1 million - paid for by Congress during COVID through the Elementary & Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER). Landscaping will be completed this spring through a local contractor and our student work crew program.
CCMS Drama Club Performs
It's a complete disaster! That's the theme of the performance put on by the CCMS Drama Club this Thursday, December 18th, and Friday, December 20th. It's a talent show dress rehearsal, and everything is going wrong. It's utter chaos! Students describe the play as both fun and funny!
The community is invited to attend both shows. The play begins at 5:30pm on both nights. If you haven't pre-purchased tickets, you can buy them at the door. We hope to see you there!
CCHS Culinary Students Plate Military MRE's
Have you ever heard of an MRE? It stands for Meals Ready-to-Eat. They're self-contained, individual meals in lightweight packaging used by service members in combat or field conditions where other food is unavailable.
CCHS Culinary Instructor Mr. Macy Hagensee, a veteran, worked with recruiters from the National Guard to bring in the MREs and then have his advanced culinary students use their creativity to produce professional-looking plates. Options included soups, pasta dishes, tacos, and breakfast meals with hash browns. They turned out fantastic!
2nd Graders Visit Powell Butte Bison Ranch
One of the great attributes of Steins Pillar Elementary School is the adventure-based learning students experience. 2nd-grade teachers Mrs. Wilson and Mrs. Shelley recently took their students on a fun outing at the Powell Butte Bison Ranch. They're learning about Westward expansion, what life was like for the settlers and Native Americans, and how the prairies were affected over time.
It was great for students to see Bison in person and learn about the animal's history and what it's like to operate a Bison ranch. We're fortunate to live in a community where local farmers and ranchers are willing to share their knowledge and experience. Thank you, Powell Butte Bison Ranch!
Five Minutes a Day Creates Lifelong Readers
We all live busy lives. Juggling work and family obligations often leave little time at each day's end. As Crook County School District embarks on a renewed effort to improve academic achievement, we want to encourage our families to consider reading with their children daily. Just five minutes can make an incredible difference.
The American Pediatrics Association says hearing stories strengthens the part of the brain associated with visual imagery, story comprehension, and word meaning. It also supports children’s social, emotional, and character development.
Our challenge to elementary parents is to read with their children for five minutes daily. Superintendent Dr. Sara Johnson, who taught kindergarten and 1st grade, says the daily practice is the best way to make a reader. Her advice to parents: Read, read, read!
