✨ Board to consider task force proposals for new schools & more
Thursday, the district's Capital Plan Task Force identified priority projects for the Kuna school board to consider as part of a revision to the 10-year plan to serve new students and maintain existing schools.
On Tuesday, the school board will review the priorities and could choose which ones to ask voters to pay for in a property tax bond election. (Board meetings are livestreamed on the Kuna School District YouTube channel.)
The task force identified the following projects for the board to choose from noting those not selected by the board would move to the second phase of the 10-year plan.
➡️ Elementary schools
Help relieve overcrowding and begin to address facilities needs in older schools. Projects include:
- Build new elementary school to serve 600+ students and help relieve overcrowding.
- Remodel and expand Ross Elementary School from serving grade 4 and 5 to serve K-5. This would allow Indian Creek and Hubbard to be shifted to Ross. If this was chosen, the task force would make recommendations on the new use of those buildings.
➡️ Middle schools
Help relieve overcrowding at Kuna Middle and create equitable middle school facilities to serve 800 students each. Projects include:
Kuna Middle School
Expand cafeteria into classrooms on the west side of the cafeteria (old Synergy room)
Convert unused career technical education space into new engineering classroom and lab space
Add auxiliary gym and locker rooms
Add classrooms
Add competition gym and locker rooms
Add tennis courts
➡️ High schools
- Option A: Continue the second phase of Swan Falls High School by adding 28 classrooms. Swan Falls would continue as an annex of Kuna High.
- Option B. Continue the second phase of Swan Falls High School by adding 28 classrooms and gyms and practice fields. Swan would become a independent high school. If this is chosen, the two high schools would continue to share performing arts and athletic competition fields which would be added in the future project.
❄️ Weather reminders 🌨️
With our first snow of the school year today, we wanted to review how bad weather impacts our schools and students.
While students may wish for a "snow day" break, canceling school because snow or other weather conditions is rare. You can review our winter weather procedures here.
Weather does impact our commutes to work and school. Here's tips for our students and our community:
- Expect pick up and drop off delays as all drivers adjust to weather conditions
- Have student(s) wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight warm clothing and warm shoes or boots
- As always, students wearing bright colors are easier for everyone to see when they are walking to school or waiting for the bus
- Slow down and watch for children who may be walking to school or waiting at bus stops.
- Clear your sidewalks of snow and ice to help keep walkers safe.
