Picture Day!

Individual Fall Pictures will be offered to both face to face (F2F) and virtual students.

For virtual students, appointments will be scheduled on Monday, November 30, 2020. Parents can pick appointment times between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. via our Google Sign-up sheet. Monday was selected for students participating in virtual learning as no other students and limited staff are in the building.

For F2F students, Thursday, December 3, 2020, will be our in-school picture day.

Social distancing measures will be in place for both F2F (OPTION 1) and Virtual (OPTION 2) students. Student will be allowed to remove their mask to take their picture.

Federal Cards

The 2020 federal card survey will include a hybrid model for elementary schools. Elementary Option 1 students will receive their federal card in hand from their homeroom teacher, as is our usual practice on Nov. 13. Option 1 parents are asked to return completed and signed federal cards to their child’s homeroom teacher no later than Friday, Nov. 20.

Elementary option 2 students’ parents will receive their child’s federal card in the mail following the Nov.13 survey date. Elementary option 2 students’ federal card packets will include a federal card, a letter to parents and a postage-paid return mail envelope. Return envelopes will be pre-addressed to be mailed to each child’s school.

Please complete this important task and return the form to our school within the requested time frame.Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

2020-2021 PTA

We are proud to announce our PTA is up and running for this school year. Our Board has some really great things in motion to support our students and staff this year. We know things will look a bit different, but they will still do some great things for us. Please consider joining our PTA and support our school. The flyer below details two different ways to join!

R.E.D. Day - Remember Everyone Deployed

On Friday, Nov. 13, the Office of Student Support Services is inviting everyone throughout VBCPS to participate in R.E.D. Day - Remember Everyone Deployed by, wearing red on Nov. 13, VBCPS will demonstrate their support for over 10,000 students with active duty parents serving in the armed forces.

On Monday, Nov. 16, a live webinar will be hosted to serve military-connected youth and families with free online differentiated tutoring resources. Sessions will be offered at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

SEL Student Survey for Students in Grades 4-12

A Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) survey will be available online for students in grades 4 through 12 beginning Monday, Nov. 2 through Friday, Nov. 13. The SEL survey was developed based on the Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) definition of SEL.

The survey items are aligned with each of the five CASEL SEL competencies including self-awareness, self-management, relationship skills, social awareness and responsible decision making. The SEL survey results can be used to support the division’s Focus of Wellbeing component of the 2020-2021 Compass to 2025 Strategic Action Agenda. In addition, a spring SEL survey administration is also planned to allow the fall and spring SEL survey results to be used as a growth measure.

The student survey may take approximately 10 minutes to complete. On Monday, Nov. 2, Department of Technology staff will be posting an app to grades 4 through 12 students’ ClassLink LaunchPad titled Fall SEL Survey. Techers will direct students to ClassLink to locate the survey link during the administration window.

Title One Presentation

ParentVue is an online medium used by VBCPS parents to access their student’s school information such as class schedules, grades, documents (i.e., progress reports and report cards), testing information, and attendance. It is an important tool for parents to use throughout their student’s school career in VBCPS. Please see the link below for directions on how to set up an account or to access your account if you already have one. Remember, report cards will be issued via ParentVue on November 17.

Attendance Reminders

Please remember that attendance is taken 5 days per week for students. Mondays are included in attendance. on Mondays, students should be participating their recorded activities as well as any assigned, live instruction with their teachers.

Activities for math, reading and content will be assigned as needed in addition to their art, music, and PE lessons.

Monday Small Group Instruction and Assessments

Beginning October 5, certain students began receiving appointments to participate in some supplementary small group instruction. Teachers are targeting instruction in identified areas of need to enhance instruction and close gaps that may be present. The instruction is in addition to the daily small group instruction students receive during the week and focuses on reading and math. Students will also receive some asynchronous activities in their core subjects on Mondays as well.

Face to Face (F2F) teachers may provide this 60-90 minutes of additional instruction Tuesday-Friday if they can work it into their schedule; and students will receive additional recorded lessons/assignments on Mondays to continue reinforcing curricular goals.

Further, some appointments will be made to address assessments that need to be completed. Please check your messages so you are aware of any live instruction or other assignments required of your student on Mondays.

Gifted Identification

Fifth Grade Families

Due to time restraints caused by returning to in-person instruction later in the school year than usual, VBCPS will be unable to screen fifth grade students. However, if a parent/guardian would like their student to be considered for gifted services, they may initiate the referral by submitting an online application available at The deadline for the application will be Monday, January 11, 2021, by 5:00 p.m.

First Grade Families

All first grade VBCPS students will be screened for gifted program services on tentitavely on December 17, 2020, in their classroom at Luxford Elementary. With parent/guardian permission for continued assessment, students who score at the 90th percentile or higher on the screening instrument are referred for additional testing. All students referred for testing are reviewed by the Gifted Identification and Placement Committee. More information will be coming.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held with parents by the end of the grading period. Conferences will be scheduled with parents virtually. Conferences will occur between November 2-10, 2020.

Let's Keep Everyone Well!

Please use the required screening each day before sending your child to school. If your child has any of the symptoms they should not come to school. If your child has any of the symptoms and comes to school they could be sent home with an Exclusion Letter from the nurse.

Per the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Algorithm for Evaluating a child with COVID-19 Symptoms for return to school, children must remain home from school for 10 calendar days should they have COVID-19 symptoms that cannot be attributed to a health condition and are new and unusual for the child.

If you have questions about COVID, isolation, symptoms to watch for, or anything pertaining to COVID, please ONLY call the clinic. I will address all the questions and give you the latest information known to me from the school system. When you call the office or security, there could be a delay in getting your questions answered, since they then have to relay them to me. Remember, with HIPAA, all information is kept confidential.
