The Weekly Hoot

January 14-18, 2013

Greetings All -

It has been a fast and furious week back, but I am glad to say that all of you fell right back into the groove! I always find it amazing how much kiddos grow over the Christmas Break! I was excited to see teachers using some new and innovative ideas with their students this week. Please remember we are moving the IPOD cart to the library, so any time you would like to check them out, please fill out the Google Calendar that was created for this reason. I had a great heart to heart with a teacher today about our new methods of teaching, was it preparing them for the STAAR test, was it preparing them for the 21st century, and what did parents actually think about it? All of these questions, as Dana pointed out on Staff Development Day, we don't know the answer to. Our conclusion was, that as a district, we are making the paradigm shift to "what is right for kids" instead of "will we be recognized or exemplary?" As long as you keep this in the forefront of everything you do in your classroom, I will wholeheartedly support you as a teacher, no matter what the numbers on a state testing report look like. I know central administration feels the same. So go ahead, take the leap of faith. Throw out the workbooks, log in to websites, blog with your students. Give your students a problem and have them figure out how to find a solution to it and what resources they need to get there. I promise those are the type of challenges they will find in real life rather than a multiple choice test. Okay, I am off my soap box now! Everyone have a great weekend!

Soaring With You This Year,

Marcy
