NRWHS March 2019 Newsletter
Mission: To prepare each student for a successful future
Academic Success = Future Success
March is an extremely important month in the academic year. Students who do well in March typically do well on the third quarter report card (the quarter ends April 5), and that sets the stage for a strong fourth quarter and finish to the school year. Please note the following:
- Students who are failing more than one course on the third quarter report card will not be eligible to attend the junior ball, senior trip, or senior prom.
- Students who achieve the College and Career Ready designation (at least a 75 on the English Regents and at least an 80 on a mathematics Regents exam) will be eligible to attend a free field trip to Darien Lake on June 24.
I informed the student body of both items in Forum on Monday. We will continue to promote and celebrate academic success.
As you continue to support your child with his/her studies, please consider asking him/her the following questions on a regular basis:
Are you staying after school for extra help on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays? Teachers are available from 2:25 to 2:55 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays to provide students with extra support.
Are you using your study halls wisely? Most students have study halls which are great opportunities to complete academic work. Study halls are staffed by teachers who can provide support. Additionally, we offer math, ELA, and science labs throughout the school day. These are targeted support opportunities with teachers in the identified content areas that students can access during their assigned study halls.
Are you using your Extensions effectively? Each day during 7th period, students receive extra support in a targeted content area. We assign students to these support opportunities – referred to as Extensions – based on their interim assessment results. This is another great opportunity for students to seek and utilize assistance from their teachers.
Do you have homework tonight? Just asking can trigger a reminder to complete an assignment, work on a project, and/or study for an upcoming test.
- Are you checking SchoolTool regularly? Parents and students can access current levels of progress by logging into the SchoolTool application (click here for more information on how to register).
We take our responsibility to support your child seriously, and we are committed to preparing him/her child for a successful future! As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Thanks very much.

More Success for Science Olympiad!
On February 2nd, our high school Science Olympiad team traveled to SUNY Brockport to compete in the Mid-Western Regional competition. This year our team consisted of seniors Shea Shattuck, Savanna Synesael, Hailey Clark, Phillip Ufholz, Jacob Smith, Samanta Osorio-Ortiz, and Emily Graham, and junior Kennedy Jones. Although there were many highlights through out the day, our shining stars were Phillip Ufholz and Jacob Smith, who took 5th in Codebusters and 7th in Write it Do It. Also finishing in the top third were Hailey Clark and Savanna Synesael in the DuctTape challenge who took 10th. Their task was to create a bridge out of an roll of duct tape, dry spaghetti, and 10 craft sticks that spanned the longest distance and held up a tennis ball with a deflection of less than 2.5 cm. Although we did not bring home a ton of medals, we had a great day and a great experience. Special thanks to Mr. Nick Wojieck, Mr. Adam Hawley and Mr. Greg Sumner for all their work helping get the team ready for the event.
NRWHS Future Story Course Guide
A group of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) teachers recently developed a course guide that students can use to link courses offered at NRWHS to careers in STEAM. Click the button at the bottom of the newsletter to view the document. This document appears in poster-form outside of Ms. Wasielewski's room. Students -- please review and reflect on the guide as you make course selections for next year!
Congrats, Students of the Month!
