During the 1400's European explorers looked for an eastern route traveled by sea to the Indies. Christopher Columbus tried to sail westward thinking it would be shorter.King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella paid for his trip. Columbus and his 89 men sailed on the Santa Maria, Pinta, and the Nina.
what is he known for
Christopher Columbus made many voyages but, is mostly known for his first one. People attribute Columbus for helping Europeans expand their boundaries with the colonization of the Americas. He claimed the Bahamas for Spain. While on his expedition Columbus met many Native Americans and explored Haiti and the Dominican Republic (Haiti and the DR used to be one country together called Hispaniola) and Cuba.
