Week of February 4th - 10th, 2019

Hello Riverside County!

Who loves the rain? I do! I feel like it adds a special element to the homeschool day. I was talking with another homeschool mama the other day about how to turn a rainy week into a success instead of feeling like it puts a HUGE damper on your homeschool days.

In our house we love measuring rainfall, sailing handmade boats down the ditch in the front yard, taking a drive in the rain for free hot chocolate at In-N-Out (yes, this is real!), building a roaring fire in the fireplace and cuddling up to read, tea parties and baking delicious treats!

All of us, young and old, enjoy the many changes a day of cold weather and rain can bring. I believe it's because we foster a bit of memory making unique to the rest of our year. It just brings out an extra special bit of joy when done together as a family. Check out the teaching tip of the week in this week's newsletter where I share more about this cozy atmosphere you can create throughout your homeschool day that the Danish refer to as "Hygge".

In this week's newsletter, we have a 'Curriculum Spotlight' on ABC Crates. Our 'Vendor Spotlight' features The Madden House! Make sure to read about both in this edition.

Also, be sure to check out Inspiration Station.

It is filled with so many amazing field trips designed by our HSTs and Liaisons just for you! Scroll through every so often so that you can see all that is being offered throughout Southern California!

Great News for Readers!

Inspire is excited to announce that we now offer Accelerated Reader for students in TK-12th grade! The cost for this program is just $20 per student in instructional funds and can be requested through your HST. Please note this program does not include books.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps parents manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child selects a book rather than having one assigned to them and reads it at their own pace. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them. They may also read articles of interest right on the screen. When finished, your child will take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) In addition, when an LP meeting comes up, you can easily print up the list of books that your child read and share it with your HST.

If you are interested in signing up for Accelerated Reader, please let your HST know. They will be happy to assist you.

Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

The State of California requires all public schools to administer the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) to students enrolled in 5th, 7th, and 9th grades. Inspire’s Physical Fitness Testing window is February 4, 2019, through March 21, 2019. We ask that parents bring their students to a test location and stay at the location during testing. Most students are finished in about an hour (test time may be a little more or less depending on the size of the location). For more information, head over here and for locations click here. Please reach out to your HST if you have any questions about your assigned testing location.
Field Trip Booking Tutorial

Want a step by step tutorial for booking your next field trip tickets on Inspiration Station? Watch this tutorial!

Inspiration Station Booking REMINDERS!

Did you know that you can log into your account on Inspiration Station to view ALL of your field trip bookings?? Checking my account is a regular part of my "Field Trip Booking Routine". I check this by selecting My Account from the drop-down in the upper right-hand corner of the Inspiration Station site. Here you will find all of the field trips you have booked. I advise everyone to always double check the field trip you had just booked by checking the amount and names of the tickets purchased. It's a great time to also input the trip date, time, and host contact information into your planner.

Happy Planning!

Utilizing Enrichment Certificates for Service Orders

Please make sure to submit your service orders 2-4 weeks prior to the start of services to allow for sufficient time for your orders to be processed. Once you have your enrichment certificate and give it to your service vendor, that is when you can begin your services.

This Week's Curriculum Spotlight: ABC Crate!

A note from the creator...

ABC Crates are educational kits with a hands-on approach that include an illustrated lesson plan, materials, follow up work, and consultations if parents or teachers need them. I have been a certified Montessori teacher and educational consultant for 19 years. Some of the younger kits include a story book. I make kits for ages preschool through sixth grade with varying themes: English, Math, Geography, Science, and Practical Life. My goal is to put out four to five new crates a month. See the current kits at Abc-Crate.com. Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m available by email and we can schedule a phone time if you need to.

Teaching Tip of the Week: Hygge!

It feels a bit silly to mention the Nordic Tradition of Hygge during their bitter cold winters as being synonymous with our 50° rainy California winters but stay with me for a moment...

"Hygge" pronounced "hoo-gah" is a word used by Danes and now highly popularized by much of the Western world, likely from cozy Instagram feeds that have caught the eyes of weary mamas during winter months.

Learning about Hygge and all its glorious coziness can add a memorable and fun atmosphere to your rainy homeschool days. Use these gloomy days where you're stuck inside to light the fireplace and turn off the rest of the lights. Let the warm glow encourage you all to grab a favorite book and cuddle up to read the day away. Why not? No fireplace? No problem! Turn on a small lamp and grab the thickest coziest blankets you have. Make a big snuggle nest ( what we call it ) on the floor and get lost in the pages of your books. There is no limit, no agenda, just enjoy.

Host an impromptu tea party with all the real dishes. Filling a large ceramic teapot with a spicy warm tea that is sure to warm fingers and bellies. Make it special with homemade or store bought treats. If you don't mind the sugar indulgence, the 99 cents store has a vast variety of the cutest little tea cookies. Splurge on a package or two and set them out on a cute little tray. Use this tea time to discuss anything you want. Pull out the globe and search for hidden countries, look at an encyclopedia for random facts about something that starts with the letter "z", or share a story from American History about the Boston Tea Party. You cannot go wrong sharing tea time and some chit chat with the ones you love.

Another way to create this cozy, special time in your home is to use the opportunity you have being stuck inside to cook together. Work on reading and writing recipes out and learning about measurements while adding ingredients. Spend time making soups and biscuits and baked goods to stock the freezer.

The memories made while embracing the lifestyle practice of "Hygge" ( although not nearly as Nordic-like here in California) will bring you and your children closer together, build a deep bond that encourages education in everyday circumstances and promotes the practice of life-long family learning. It is what homeschooling is all about!

Get cozy!

Hi everyone! I am a mom of 3 awesome kids ranging in age from 10 to 6 years old. My husband and I are high school sweethearts and have been married for 16 years. Having homeschooled our children over the last 6 years in 3 different states, I've found homeschooling here in California, especially with Inspire Charter, has been a great fit for our homeschool journey. I am grateful for our ability to homeschool so freely and I aspire to assist other families with their own homeschool adventures!
