CAASPP Testing this Week

This week your child will take the SBAC assessment for English Language Arts and Math. It is very important for all students be in school and on time this week. Those who are tardy will not be allowed to test and will need to make it up next week in another class. You can help your child by:

1. Ensuring they get a good night's sleep

2. Eat a healthy breakfast either at school or at home

3. Motivate your child to try his/her very best

4. Scheduling appointments for after school hours

Your child is welcome to bring his/her own headphones/ear buds for testing. 4th grade teachers will be providing mints, as peppermint has been shown in studies to help increase focus, lessen anxiety, and enhance memory (see research below). If you would NOT like your child to receive a peppermint we ask you contact your child's teacher.

Peppermint

Memory and Mood

A study published in the 2008 “International Journal of Neuroscience” found that participants exposed to peppermint oil experienced enhanced memory and processing speeds. Peppermint also increased their alertness while helping them maintain a sense of calm. In 2006, Dr. Bryan Raudenbush from Wheeling Jesuit University found that drivers exposed to peppermint scent were less frustrated, anxious and fatigued and stayed more alert after driving for prolonged periods.

How Peppermint Works

Raudenbush explained that peppermint scent significantly increases oxygen saturation and blood pressure, which results in physiological arousal. Blood brings oxygen to your brain, so if peppermint increases the amount of oxygen in your blood and then increases your blood pressure, more oxygen travels to your brain. The more oxygen available to your brain, the better your concentration and focus.
