Celebrating Kindergarten and 1st Grade

Big picture

This week, The Patrick Henry Post has been taken over by our lower elementary teachers in Kindergarten and 1st Grade. Take a look below for a glimpse into two amazing classrooms led by Ms. Karin Versen and Ms. Megan Willard!

From the Desk of Ms. Willard

Since coming back from winter break, Kindergarten has been focused on becoming first grade ready!! We have been hard at work using our number sense skills to add and subtract up to 5. In reading we have transitioned into understanding why people read stories and have been comparing traditional folk tales and fairy tales. We have also been studying why authors write stories for others to read. After doing our research, we decided we are making our own fiction stories. We can't wait to read them to our friends and family!

This week, Team Versen takes a close look at long vowel e and inflectional ending -ed. We are expanding our literary exposure by studying a collection of poetry. Math has us thinking about double-digit numbers as sets of tens and ones (and realizing how much we are growing up as our skills increase). For social studies, we will be learning lessons from traditional folktales and writing about why they are “must reads.” Science has us embracing light and its effect on snow. You will be able to see our snowflake models, and this light phenomenon, hanging from our classroom windows.
