Skycrest... Where students shine like stars!
November 1, 2021
Happy November Skycrest Families,
November is here! As the weather changes to cooler and wet days please remember to write your child’s name on all jackets and sweaters. When students go outside to play they tend to take off jackets, throw them down and then forget about them - we want to make sure jackets make it back home. If you are looking for a “lost” item, check the lost and found clothes hanger located in the front of the MP room. There are many sweatshirts and jackets hanging on the rack. Please make note that during the Thanksgiving Break clothes will be donated.
I know many of you are wondering, “When will school pictures come in?” Unfortunately due to the shipping line supply shortage the photographers are awaiting for photo paper. They are hoping to have by early December. Once the pictures arrive to the school we will be able to reschedule a picture day for those who missed picture day or do not like the way your child’s pictures turned out.
Reminder the school bell rings at 8:45 – this is when your child should be walking into their classroom. Drop off can be a busy time but it is important that students are ready to go and begin the day for learning. If your child arrives after the bell has rung they do need to get a tardy slip.
Last week students celebrated Red Ribbon Week (RRW). The banners hanging up in front of the school look fantastic! Our Character Ed video assembly was on Respect and was also shared last week, another reminder for students to learn the importance of keeping our bodies healthy, growing our brain, and having a positive attitude. This all starts by showing Respect to oneself! Students were reminded that Respect means using kind words to others, choosing to use appropriate language, respecting oneself by focusing on learning, being kind, and treating others how we want to be treated. Each day last week students participated in an activity and received a special treat. On Friday all students received a Skycest Star Waterbottle. If you have not already done so, please take a minute and write your child’s name on their water bottle, we don’t want any student to lose their water bottle.
Please mark your calendar – There is no school on Thursday, November 11 in honor of Veteran’s Day and no school for students on Friday, November 12 – this is a teacher workday.
Parent –Teacher conferences are scheduled for November 15 – 19. All TK – 5th grade students will have minimum days with all students dismissed at 11:55. Fall Conferences are scheduled with every parent, so please make every sure to attend your scheduled conference and be a part of your child’s academic learning and progress. This is an important time that teachers will share how your child is progressing towards academic standards and what interventions and supports are available. Teachers are looking forward to meeting with all parents and guardians to share student academic progress. Conference information and schedules are being sent home this week. Our goal at Skycrest is 100% parent participation!
Parents, please make sure that the school office has current phone numbers and addresses. We want to make sure all families are receiving our school calls and mailings. In the event of an emergency we need to have current phone numbers to reach parents.
If you have any questions please let Ms. Rangel and or Mrs. Dittmer know,

No School November 11 and 12
Friday, November 12, is a teacher work day. It is the last day of trimester 1. Teachers will be wrapping up the trimester and preparing for parent conferences. This is a day off for students.
Parent Conferences November 15-19
Please make sure you schedule a time to meet with your child's teacher. Teachers will be sharing progress and current levels for your student. You are an important member of the team, and your observations and support are crucial to your child's success. This is a chance for your teacher to gather information from you, as well as for you to ask questions of them.
November 22-26 is our Thanksgiving Break. No School
Parking Lot Reminders
The safety of our students and families is our top priority! Please drive slowly and follow traffic flow, signs, and directions from staff. Always pull all the way up to C1 to allow room for all cars. If your child is walking from a parked car, please have them walk down to the yellow crosswalk to pass between cars to the sidewalk and not dart between cars. Please do not get out of car if you are in the drop off/pick up lane. Please park in a space if you need to get out.
Arrival
Students may arrive at 8:15 AM if they plan to have breakfast in our cafeteria. If you arrive early, please have your child remain in the car with you until the cafeteria opens. Please pull along the yellow line closest to cafeteria to allow for preschool families and through traffic to get around you to park and drop off their children. Those not eating breakfast should not arrive before 8:30 AM. Gates are opened at 8:40 to allow students to head to classrooms. School begins at 8:45.
Dismissal
Remember that our parking lot is closed in the afternoon to insure our G wing families and buses can get in and out of the parking lot. When the lot is opened when the bell rings, please follow the traffic flow through the lot to the C wing classrooms to pick up your child. Do not stop in front of the office or drive against the arrows. All students picked up in a vehicle are to be picked up near C1 and not in from of the MP room or the office. Please let others picking up your child know of our procedures and to follow the rules of the parking lot. Remember, the parking lot can get congested but a little dose of patience goes a long way. And always remember to slow down when driving through the parking lot – 5 mph!

Spotlight on Fifth Grade!
What are your current areas of focus?
In math we are focused on adding and subtracting decimals. Students are having great success with this concept. We are also talking about characters in literature. Students are examining the relationships between characters and how that affects their actions. In writing, students are working on best practices for informational writing. These skills will be used in their American Indian Project which they are working on now. In social studies, they will be adding a visual piece to their writing, and creating a presentation to share with their peers.
What are students enjoying? What is creating interest?
Students are very excited about social studies and learning about the cultural regions and how tribes differed depending on their region. They are enjoying the American Indian project, which they are working on in collaborative groups. While students are working in teams, they will be graded on only the portions they are responsible for. Students are also excited about science. The current unit of study is called States of Matter. Students are investigating how to identify materials by their properties, and how those materials react to outside forces.
What can parents do to help and support at home?
- Read! Read with your student, and encourage them to read at least 50 minutes every night!
- If possible, use extra time at home to work in iReady on math and language arts. Twenty minutes on each whenever possible will only help them improve their skills and help fill in gaps they may be missing.
- Talk to your child about school. Ask your child, "What is making sense?" and "What is confusing?" Encourage them to come to class with questions to advocate for themselves and their learning needs.
