Message from the Principal
St Patrick’s Day
No doubt many of our Irish families (and even those not Irish but pretending to be for the day) had a wonderful day celebrating St Patrick’s Day last Saturday, 17th March. It was great to see Perth awash with green as people headed out to celebrate Ireland’s national day. Wearing green and bringing along a smile looked like the order of the day.
Congratulations on the Swimming Carnival
Many thanks to Adriano D’Adamo for coordinating not only the Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival that took place last Friday, but for all the out of school training leading up to the event. This is a huge commitment and very much appreciated by us all, especially by those children who set themselves a goal to achieve and participated so well.
Congratulations to Mercy Faction for winning the Carnival for the first time in twenty years! An amazing effort with each swimmer in the faction contributing to this win. A great quote forwarded to me by Mark Matthews, dad of Joel in Year 6B says it all -
“I never lose – either I win or I learn.”
National Day of Action Against Bullying
On a serious note, last Friday was the National Day of Action Against Bullying. This day is an important reminder that we must all stand up to stop bullying. Standing up for people we see being bullied makes such a difference to their lives and it is important that we teach our children not to stand by when someone is being bullied. We need to help each other feel safe and remember that at our school we treat others the way we want to be treated. It is our differences that make us strong and we must celebrate them.
Students who purchase Bullying No Way wristbands from school may wear them for the remainder of the term.
On a finishing note, we warmly welcome Mrs Gen Fenlon back onto staff as she takes up a teaching position for one day per week. Mrs Fenlon worked with us last semester as our LIGHTS Teacher and was an integral member of the Tournament of the Minds team.
Again, thank you for your continued support.
Many blessings
Tamara McGougan
Principal

This week is Harmony Week. To coincide with the week, Whitford Catholic will also have a day of action against bullying. During the week Student Leaders and Ministries will be selling ‘Bullying. No Way’ wristbands for 50c. Proceeds will go towards purchasing resources on anti-bullying.
On Friday the 23rd March students are invited to wear something orange, the traditional colour for Harmony Day.
Gelato Van Visit
The gelato van will also be visiting the school on Thursday the 22nd March to help celebrate Harmony Week. Please mark this date on your calendar. Children from Pre-Primary to Year 6 can enjoy many yummy flavours of gelato for $3.50 each. Money is to be sent to your child’s class on the day only. The van will be available after school on the courts for anyone who would like extra ice cream.
Joondalup Festival Lantern Parade
Many thanks to the Year 2 and Year 4 staff, students and parent helpers for the amazing effort you have put into preparing for the Joondalup Lantern Parade this weekend. Best wishes for a wonderful time and you’ll certainly rock with your fabulous creations!
Colour Run
The annual WCPS Lap-a-thon took on a colourful twist this year as our students took part in the first WCPS Colour Run. What a great way to raise money to create some amazing new play spaces for our students!
Thanks to our wonderful P&F for organising another great event. Don’t forget to get your donation envelopes in as soon as possible - remember, the first class that returns all envelopes wins a pizza lunch!!
Interschool Chess Tournament
Next week the WCPS Chess Team will take on Boyare Primary School in the second round of the Interschool Chess Tournament.
The first round saw WCPS students win all four matches - what a great result. Best of luck to the team in their next round!
Project Compassion Story of the Week
This week’s story takes us to the Philippines to visit Psyche Mae.
When Psyche Mae featured in Project Compassion 2008, she was living in a squatter settlement, on the edge of a giant rubbish dump outside Manila in the Philippines. Her family was forced to pick through the rubbish to sell what they could to survive.
In 2018, Psyche Mae is now a young social worker, achieving her dream of helping others struggling to leave poverty behind them – with plans to study a Master’s degree.
Thanks to the support of individuals and Caritas Australia through Project Compassion, the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) program helps people like Psyche Mae to learn job and income-generating skills, encourages education, addresses health and runs programs that enable members to save money and take out small, low interest loans. It’s estimated around 5000 people are assisted directly or indirectly by this program.
Psyche Mae’s mother is now a full-time sewer at home and her father works with the House Repair program, run by FCJ. Her brother, Franklin has graduated from tertiary education and is working in IT, while her other two brothers and her sister are studying hard.
With their jobs and the help of a community savings plan – Psyche Mae’s entire family managed to lift themselves out of poverty and build a just future.

Swimming Carnival
Thank you to all the parent helpers, teachers and students for another fantastic Interhouse Swimming Carnival. A great day of competition, record breaking times and the general effort of all students is to be truly commended.
We experienced difficulty with some students leaving the carnival early, and some swimming in the nearby pool. This caused many students missing their scheduled novelty events. As the staff and parent helpers have a duty of care of all children, I would ask that in the future, all students are to remain supporting their faction until the completion of the carnival at 2:00pm.
The results for individual recognition (champion students) and the winning House will be presented at a small assembly on Monday morning (26th March) in the Quad at 8.50am.
