Candy Bar Exchange
Don't forget: On the last day before Christmas break, December 20, we will be doing a candy bar exchange. If you wish for your child to participate, please bring in an unwrapped king-sized candy bar on or before this day. (When I say "unwrapped," that does not mean I want you to take the candy bar's wrapper off, I simply mean you do not need to cover it with gift wrap.) We will be having a little creative fun with the exchange that day. As always, thank you for making our learning a fun and inviting activity!
LES Annual Christmas Program
Don't forget about the Christmas music program on Thursday! Second grade students need to arrive no later than 6:45 for their 7:00 performance. Please see that your child has used the restroom before having him or her meet me behind the stage of the UCHS auditorium. Similarly, it will be best for you to keep coats, hats, gloves, etc. with you. You will retrieve your child behind the stage just after their performance.
12 Days of Christmas Read Alouds
The Union County Public Library has lined up current and retired Union County teachers to read Christmas stories that will be shown on the UCPL Facebook page. Tune in at 7:30 each night starting tonight to hear a bedtime story (click here). The action starts with Mrs. Sourbeer, and continues throughout Christmas Eve. Yours truly will even be sharing A Musher's Night Before Christmas on Monday, December 16th. You know me, I'm not going to miss a single chance to share my love of sled dogs. I hope I can be a part of your child's bedtime story routine next week. Be sure to check out the schedule of readers of your favorite teachers below.
An Idiom a Day
We will be studying an idiom a day for the next several weeks. Idioms for are word combinations that we use which have a different meaning than the literal meanings of each word. For instance, “bought the farm” has nothing to do with purchasing real estate, but instead refers to dying. The students are showing a solid understanding of these sometimes hilarious idioms, and at the same time they are meeting the following academic standards:
- "Recognize the meanings of idioms in context."
- "Determine how the author uses words and phrases to provide meaning to works of literature, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language, including figurative language."
Next Week's Share Topic
Photo Fun: Photographs help us to recall memorable times in our lives. For this activity, locate one favorite photograph to use in an oral presentation to the class. Birthday parties, special vacations, school activities, or family fun are all good photo choices. In your presentation you will tell the story of what is happening in the photo.
School Closing and Delay Information
As we enter the winter season, we must be prepared for school closings, delays, and early dismissals. Always make sure that any contact information changes are updated in our PowerSchool Parent Portal system. Please understand that it is not practical for teachers to make phone calls to families when those inevitable unexpected early dismissals might occur. Have a plan in place for your child before the situation arises, and make sure (s)he knows what that plan is.

Student Council Food Drive
I want to thank those of you who've allowed your child to participate in the LES food drive. Our class was a consistent contributor of non-perishable items. This is always a great way to practice our featured LifeSkill of caring. LES can be proud of our contributions to those in need.
