National School Counseling Week
This week, February 6-10, 2023, is National School Counseling Week.
On behalf of everyone at Tupper Lake Middle/High School, I’d like to express our deepest appreciation for all that Brian and Erin do to ensure the success of our students and families.
Brian and Erin contribute to the continuum of support that our students need to achieve academically and graduate ready for college.
In partnership with teachers, staff, and administrators, they help students pursue their academic goals, social and personal development, and specific career pathways.
They also collaborate with our families to foster their children’s educational, personal, and social growth.
In support of the whole child, in and outside school, Brian and Erin identify and utilize community resources that enhance their counseling programs. They work hard to make our students feel safe and valued so they can reach their full potential.
Let’s celebrate our amazing school counselors!!
Their effort and commitment ensure that our students are dreaming big and prepared for excellence in school, college, and life!
Student Career Exploration and Goal-Setting!
WHAT IS A GOAL?
A goal is defined in Webster’s dictionary as an “objective...the purpose towards which an endeavor is directed.”
Students have definitions of their own:
“A goal you set for yourself to become better at something.”
“A goal is something you try to achieve by a certain time.”
“A goal is something you work at until you get it.”
“A goal is a place or idea of what you want to be.”
“A goal is something someone strives to achieve.”
“A goal is a dream that you want to pursue.”
“A goal is a point to work towards.”
“A goal is a personal achievement.”
WHAT’S THE POINT?
There was a lot of conversation with children about why goals are so important.
♣ Goal setting is an excellent way to plan for your future actively.
♣ Goal setting will give you something to aim for in life. Dreaming and doing go hand in hand.
♣ This is an ideal time for you to set meaningful goals that will, in turn, give a healthy cycle of achievement and success.
At the end of this week, Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Quonce will begin to work with our students on Shadow Day!
National Honor Society Induction
Tupper Lake Central School National Honor Society held its induction ceremony Wednesday night. The faculty committee selected new members: Zoe A., Grant B., Reagan F., Tyler L., Ava L., Thomas P., Lexi S., Rachel S., and Aubrey S.
The new members join Hayleigh Colon, Olivia Ellis, Meika Nadeau, and Jamin Whitmore.
These students have demonstrated excellence in the four pillars of the National Honors Society - scholarship, service, leadership, and character.
I appreciate the current members' work to help get us all oriented. Thank you to Ms. Leroux for getting the group going again and our faculty committee for their work selecting the students!
They join a fantastic group of students! We look forward to what the future holds!

Attendance-Thank You for your help and support with this!!
Here at Tupper Lake Middle/High School there are some big celebrations we should have over attendance and lates.
At the mid-way point, average daily attendance is up .9%.
- Thinking- That doesn’t seem like much.
- It’s 297 school days!
- Late arrivals are down 1.93% from last year.
We are excited about this progress. We are also hopeful to work with you to continue this growth.
We know that if a student misses just 2 days a month, they meet the definition of Chronically Absent (missing 10% or more days of school in a year). Chronically absenteeism is the number one predictor of student struggle in high school. Quite frankly, if they aren't here regularly, then they will not be successful students.
We know students get sick, but we also know that COVID developed some bad habits for attendance. Please help us to get your students into school.
Many absences are valid, and those are not the ones I am talking about here.
I am talking about days when your child wakes up and complains about all of the likely things they use to get out of school:
1. Peer Conflicts
2. Mental Health (Anxiety about school is the one we hear most post-covid)
3. Adult issues
4. Whatever else their brain can conceive of to convince you they don't need or have to go to school
We have a great staff ready to help your child through any issue; we need the children here to help.
I want to be clear and state that we are not saying that issues students may be having aren't real; we know that oftentimes they are.
Instead, we know avoiding school will not help any of these issues. Quite to the contrary, avoidance only further harms our students' success in school. The only things we can't help with are things we don't know about.
Please help us to get your kids to school every day; we miss them when they are not there. If there are issues or barriers to them getting to school, let us know, we are here to help.
Keep in touch- Be sure to reach out if there is something significant in your child's life that you feel we should be aware of.
You can report the absence by calling (518-359-3322) or using our email address: attendance@tupperlakecsd.net. When reporting the absence, please be sure to include the following:
- Student's name
- Reason for absence
Thanks for your help with this.

Athletics!
The Winter Sports season is moving along and giving us all something to come out and support!
Congratulations to our teams and coaches; the games this past week were amazing! Many were close, and in all cases, the team played/ran hard!! It was also great to celebrate a staff member.
This next weekend we also have Empire State Games in action. We have many athletes participating in those events. Here is the schedule.
Below is the tentative schedule for this week. We know that weather plays a factor, and Mr. Brown is continually working to reschedule games/meets that get canceled due to weather or other factors.
Plenty more sports action is coming up, so stay tuned for updates. I like to get updates from the notify me section of this website!
Or- keep an eye on the athletics website or Section X BOCES schedule for the most up-to-date schedule.
Stay tuned, sports fans. As always, thank you for being an athletic supporter.

Johnny's Ambassadors
Citizen Advocates Prevention Programming has secured funding to assist our Franklin County Prevention Task Force in protecting our youth with a safe and drug-free community.
This project focuses on raising awareness about the dangers and risks of the recent legalization of cannabis. The group will partner with Johnny's Ambassador's foundation, which Laura Stack developed. Laura lost her son Johhny to suicide after he became psychotic by dabbing high-potency marijuana concentrates and thought the mob was after him.
Laura responded by forming the nonprofit Johnny’s Ambassadors to educate parents, teens, and communities about the dangers of today’s high-THC marijuana on adolescent brain development, mental illness, and suicide. The devastating loss of her child gives Laura a powerful voice and a platform for change. By sharing Johnny’s warning about marijuana, Laura is determined to start a movement to bring teen marijuana use, mental illness, and suicide into the spotlight and help youth make better choices.
A community event is noted below, and there will be a school assembly on 2/15 where Laura will share her story.
If you have any further questions, please stop by Ms. Trudell's office at the middle-high school, email her at emilyt@tupperlakecsd.net, or give her a call at (518) 359-3322 Ext. 2047!
Thank you for checking out our weekly update. If you have ideas, questions, or concerns please email amandaz@tupperlakecsd.net.
Please follow us on Facebook and our website for up to date information.
Take care,
Mrs. Zullo, Principal
