Statewide School Safety Plan highlights relating to school counselors
- Recommendation: Prioritize the importance of the mental and behavioral health needs of students by freeing up counselors to focus on those needs, encourage school district’s to add more counselors at the campus level, and appropriate funds to fill in gaps.
- "The strategy I most strongly encourage the Legislature to consider is greater investment in mental health – especially crisis intervention counselors. As long as mental health challenges trouble our children, there will never be enough safety barriers we can build to protect our students. If, however, we can address the mental health challenges faced by some of our students, it will do more than make our schools safer, it will build a better future for those troubled students and for our state." - Governor Greg Abbott
Youth and Adult Mental Health First Aid Trainings @ ESC 11 - MULTIPLE TRAINING DATES THIS FALL
- Mental Health First Aid is part of the Texas Governor's Statewide School Safety Plan. Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour, evidence-based program designed to develop the skills to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness. The program was created in 2001 by an Australian nurse specializing in health education. This program is often compared to CPR training. A person with no clinical training learns to assist a person experiencing a mental health situation until a trained person arrives. Click the form below to sign up for one of these excellent trainings that support district- and campus-level safety and emergency response plans.
- A proud partnership with MHMR of Tarrant County and the DFW Hospital Council (DFWHC).

- The dates reflected on these forms are the remaining offerings that have not yet reached their enrollment capacity.
ESC 11 has a Crisis Support Team. Did you know?
Emergencies and crises sometimes happen. In these instances, ESC 11 is ready to support you.
The ESC 11 Crisis Support Team is an organized, trained group of professionals who can be deployed free of charge to work together with district personnel as they implement their district’s crisis management plan. While it is important for districts to implement their own plans and engage their own staff in providing appropriate response services, under some circumstances, the assistance offered by the ESC 11 Crisis Support Team may be necessary to support the long- and short-term, on- and off-site management of tasks such as:
- Obtaining temporary or permanent meeting facilities,
- Problem-solving and logistical planning,
- Large- and small-group counseling,
- Technical support,
- Communications support, and
- Clerical, office, MOU, RFP, contract, and procurement assistance.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 9AM-4PM - Psychological First Aid
- Location: ESC Region 11, 1451 S. Cherry Ln., White Settlement, TX 76108
- Description: The field of school safety and emergency management has evolved significantly over the past decade. Tragically, acts of violence, natural disasters, and terrorist attacks have taught us many lessons. We also know that other types of emergencies can impact schools, including medical emergencies, transportation accidents, sports injuries, peer victimization, public health emergencies, and the sudden death of a member of the school community. We now recognize the need for school emergency management plans that are up-to-date and take an “all-hazards” approach with clear communication channels and procedures that effectively reunite parents and caregivers with students. We have also learned that preparing school administrators, teachers, and school partnering agencies before a critical event is crucial for effective response, the value of ongoing training and emergency exercises, and that having intervention models that address the public health, mental health, and psychosocial needs of students and staff is essential to a safe school environment and the resumption of learning.
