The GATER
Irvine Unified School District - September 2016
Message from the Coordinator
Welcome back to school for all returning families, and welcome to those of you that are new to IUSD. It is my pleasure to share with you this latest edition of the GATER. The GATER is IUSD's electronic newsletter for our GATE families and other community members interested in the education of Gifted and Advanced Learners. Through the GATER we will share information about IUSD's program as well as other information and resources to support you as you raise your gifted child.
It is my honor to have been selected as IUSD's new Gifted and Advanced Learner Coordinator. I look forward to supporting our families across the district in the years to come. While new to this important role in IUSD, I have been a member of our community as both a staff member and parent for some time. I joined IUSD in 2007 after teaching at the elementary and middle school levels. Since then it has been my pleasure to serve as the Assistant Principal of Rancho Middle School and Principal of University Park and Alderwood Elementary Schools.
Please enjoy the information shared below and perhaps I will see at the upcoming conference or movie screening!
Sincerely,
Kara Rydman
Gifted and Advanced Learner Coordinator
CAC-GATE
The Community Advisory Committee for GATE serves as an important vehicle for parent and community involvement in the educational program of gifted and advanced learners. The committee is comprised of parent representatives from each school within our district. CAC-GATE hosts general parent community meetings to promote open communication between district administrators, school staff, and parents. Meetings also provide parents with information and opportunities related to gifted education. All of our CAC-GATE parent nights are open to all IUSD parents.
Thank you to those parents that were able to attend our first CAC-GATE Meeting of the year. If you could not make it to the meeting, please visit our website to view the presentation and meeting summary. All future meetings are posted on the website and will be announced in this newsletter.

“From the director of CHILD OF GIANTS: My Journey with Maynard Dixon and Dorothea Lange, 2e: Twice Exceptional follows the personal journeys of a unique group of high school students in Los Angeles who have been identified as “twice exceptional” – gifted or highly gifted individuals with learning disabilities or differences.
