Dear Families/Caregivers:
Respect is the consideration for someone’s feelings, needs, rights, and traditions. It is an important part of listening and communication, so people feel seen and heard. When students understand and practice respect, they are better able to respect themselves and others.
We learned how people might treat you in a disrespectful way, even if you treat them with respect. Here are some strategies for responding to disrespect:
• Model respect.
• Pause and analyze the situation.
• Determine what you can do.
Here are some ways that you can help your teen respond when they experience or witness disrespect.
• Model respect and encourage your teen to do the same. Remind your teen that they may not be able to control how others act, but that they can treat others as they would like to be treated.
• Encourage your teen to pause before assuming an interaction is disrespectful to determine whether there could be a misunderstanding due to differing beliefs about respect.
• Support your teen in advocating for themselves and others when experiencing or witnessing disrespect. Discuss how an intervention could be direct, like saying something in the moment, or could involve asking for help.
