School Quarterly Newsletter - November 2016
News from the Principal - Ms. Crummie
Leading the Way with Creativity and Sustainability!
The new school year began smoothly. During this first quarter of school, our teachers and staff opened the pathway of learning opportunities that embedded 21st century skills of communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. As you read this quarterly school e-news, take notice how we are leading the way with creativity and sustainability.
Stay informed by checking out our school and PTO's web page with the calendar events and student activities. Follow our school's and students' twitter feed which also gives on-going announcements and student reflections about their learning experiences. Your continued support of volunteering, monetary contributions, participation in our PTO's community-building fundraiser events, food contributions to our teacher/staff appreciation lunches, supporting our PTO Eagle Time after-school enrichment program and establishing routines at home with your child to come to school prepared and ready to learn is essential to our continued success.
Being a season of thanksgiving, we thank the PTO Executive Board and PTO for their amazing support to our school as well as many other parent leaders, volunteers and community helpers such as; Miller School Tutors, WAHS Teacher Cadets, FISH volunteers, Henley Helpers and our 2016-17 Crozet Connections of local business Platinum and Gold sponsors. Thank You for making Crozet a warm, wonderful community school!
Have a safe and restful holiday season!
News from the Clinic - Mrs. Hajek
The Crozet Clinic has been staying very busy which is typical for the fall season. We have had no reported cases of the flu, and now is the time to get the vaccine if that is on your list of things to do! Vision screening is routinely done on all 3rd, 7th, and 9th grade students, and anytime upon request. I am in the process of completing this screening to all of our third graders, and will contact parents/guardians of any child who does not pass. If you would like to keep any over the counter medications at school for your child to use such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or cough drops I am happy to give you a permission form to sign. The medication needs to be in the original container, and I will keep it in the clinic. I am in the clinic daily from 7:45 until 3:00. Please call at 823-4800 if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child's health. Thank You! Debbie Hajek
News from Guidance - Mrs. Joyner
It has been such a great start to the school year so far. We have enjoyed many activities throughout the first quarter. Students have spent time building community and I have visited all classes for classroom guidance. Our Kindness Kick-Off Week was a huge success! We had great participation and our students and staff really got excited about “throwing kindness around like confetti” as Kid President would say! If I can support your student or family in any way please feel free to give me a call or send an email.
News from Ms. Laine & Mr. Laird
We did a lot of work in PE this quarter (football throw, catch, punt, and kickoff; soccer dribble, pass, shoot, and goalkeeping; learning some of the major bones of the body). We also had time for celebrations of history (Constitution Day, Columbus Day); celebrations that are tradition at our school (PE Buddy Day, Halloween); and some that were crazy and fun (Talk Like a Pirate Day, Reptile Awareness Day).
News from Music - Mrs. Brown
Students explored many musical pathways during our first nine weeks of school. Fourth & fifth grade students are preparing for their winter performance on Thursday December 15th. These students are creating and performing all original music for the show. The show will feature a variety of instruments including recorder and xylophone. Performing in an instrumental ensemble helps our students build teamwork, listening skills, coordination, and confidence. Fifth grade students attended a concert performed by the UVA Symphony Orchestra. Students heard several classical selections and saw how the four orchestral families work together with a conductor to perform music. Below are highlights of our learning:
News from the Library - Mrs. Anhold
The students have really been enjoying our new library space. The puppet/keva plank area is the most popular, as well as drawing on the tables. Other students have enjoyed getting out of some of the chaos and into the quiet room.
The book fair was a huge success this year selling almost $1000 more than last year. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this a success.
Grades K, 1, and 2 have been listening to the Virginia Readers’ Choice books and will vote for their favorite once we read all ten. Third graders have been busy learning the card catalog and how to find books in the library. And fourth and fifth are working on their December production.
Kindergarten - Community Helpers
We have had many community helpers visit kindergarten over the past nine weeks. The students have enjoyed learning about their jobs and tools they use. They are also learning and practicing asking purposeful questions.
1st Grade- Equine Studies
First Grade took their first field trip to Camp Friendship as part of our equine studies. This was a hands on experience for the children! They were able to groom the horses. They learned about the different foods and medicines horses need. They also got to go on a fun hayride!
2nd Grade -Rain Garden Habitat
Second grade students traveled to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens in Richmond and also purchased, researched and planted perennials in the Crozet Rain Garden Habitat. Each student has begun keeping a science journal which they will use throughout the year.
3rd Grade - Crozet Public Library
This quarter third graders traveled to the Crozet Public Library to meet the new Branch Manager and get library cards. Everyone had a fantastic time getting to know her and seeing the library!
4th Grade- Local Watershed
Fourth graders explored and mapped our local watershed! We are also becoming experts on Virginia geography.
5th Grade - IMPACT
Fifth grade gained strong organizational and note-taking skills in our first quarter together. We explored super, orchestrated pieces, intriguing artwork, Grand Caverns, a day without water, and our nation’s electoral process. Our fifth graders are growing some solid wings to soar into our second quarter.
