From the Principal
Fall is upon us, and our teachers have been engaging students in learning for several weeks now.. We are excited to see how well students are doing! We also know that at times, academics may be challenging, and your child may struggle. We want students to struggle to a certain extent because struggling helps them learn to persevere and to power through a concept or idea that might be hard. We call this “productive struggle.” Students need to be challenged and struggle. However, if they are struggling to the point of getting frustrated, there are some strategies they can use to get back on track.
Encourage your student to take a short break, take a breath and attack whatever they are working on from another angle. Sometimes they will need positive encouragement. The language we use to help students when they are struggling is important. For example, students may say, "I can't do this." A helpful response is, "You can't do this yet." The power of YET goes a long way, and we want our students to have a growth mindset. Not everything will be easy, butI know our students can do hard things.
During our morning message this year, we will focus on our emotional regulation. During the past couple of weeks, each message has been focused on the Zones of Regulation. We want our students to feel their feelings and be able to express them to us. Using the Zones helps build a common language that all staff can use with students. Here are some examples. I encourage you to use similar language at home to check in with your student.
Blue Zone: Sad, Sick, Tired, Bored, and Moving Slowly
Green Zone: Happy, Calm, Focused, Feeling Okay, Ready to Learn
Yellow Zone: Frustrated, Worried, Excited, Silly/Wiggly, Loss of Some Control
Red Zone: Angry, Mad, Terrified, Elated, Yelling/Hitting, Out of Control
If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with us. We are here to help!

EVA Families,
We have had a great start to the school year at EVA. Students are engaged, participating, have their camera on and learning from our skilled teachers. Now that we are all getting into the routine of school here are some important things to remember to support your student academically and socially/emotionally.
Academics:
- Continue to inquire about their school day. This will show them you value their education and will help them want to perform well.
- Continue to provide a quiet place free from distractions for your student to participate in school. As students get more comfortable with the routine of school it can be easy to slip into complacency and develop some bad habits or put things off causing unnecessary stress.
- For middle school families you can check your students grade here: https://gradebook.everettsd.org/Wazzle/Gradebook/Logon.aspx to see how your students are performing.
- For the younger students parent involvement and support is really important. The trick for parents is finding the right balance of supporting but not doing everything for their student. You want them to do things on their own and you many need to give them a little direction but let them do the work.
Social/Emotional Health:
- Getting outside and off a screen is really important for any child and especially for EVA students. Do what you can to turn off electronics in the house everyday for a least 30 minute. This may be having dinner as a family, going on a walk, playing board game or reading to your kids or having them read to you. This will be good for everyone in the family.
- Make sure to have a set bed time and keep electronics out of the room. Children need 8 to 10 hours a sleep each night depending on the child. Take a few minutes at night to talk with your child when you tuck them in, this can build great confidence in children and give them a chance to tell you their perspective on things that can often be surprising.
- Having breakfast and lunch can really help children perform better in school and feel better overall. You don’t have a make a hot breakfast every morning, although that is a lot of fun to do, make sure to have something your children can easily make before school. This will help with focus and mental energy.
