Quotes in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only

love can do that."

"Life's most persistent and urgent question, 'What are you doing for others?"

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

Martin Luther King Jr. Lessons Shared

Miss McGroarty's first grade class began their study of Martin Luther King Jr. and other influential people of color this past week in honor of our upcoming Black History Month. They began their lesson by examining two different colored eggs (one brown and one white), and discussing the similarities and differences between the eggs' appearances. Students then wrote and made predictions about what the different eggs would look like on the inside once they were cracked. To their amazement, despite the eggs' different exteriors - they were both the same on the inside. This discovery lead to an awesome conversation about how people may look different from one another but under it all - we are all human beings. Miss McGroarty's class also enjoyed reading "Let's Talk About Race" by Julius Lester and discussed that while race is a beautiful part of each human beings' story that should be celebrated - there is so much more to everyone than the color of their skin. In the upcoming weeks, her students will be learning even more about the courageous and historic acts of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as what they can do in their own lives daily to spread inclusiveness and kindness.

We Got The Beat!

For this week's music lesson, Mrs. Heininger's 1st grade students learned how to identify and tap a steady beat! Davenport Primary's music teacher, Miss Cottrell, asked students to use two pencils, pens, or markers as rhythm sticks as they tapped out a steady beat to "Hello Song".

Hello Song 1

Be it virtual, hybrid, reading, writing or math, our Davenport students continue learning while adjusting to different schedules and techniques all thanks to our incredible teachers and support staff! The following pictures of Mrs. Lopusan's class shows us just how it's done.
