Longfellow Voice

March 23 - 27, 2015

Principal's Message

What is the "voice" the students in your classroom hear when they take on a new challenge? Does the voice inspire them? Do they hear, "This will be hard, but I can do it!" Or does the voice they hear discourage them and make them hear, "This is so hard—there's no way I'll get it right." This voice, what we call self-talk, can be positive and motivate our students—or it can be negative and act as a deterrent to their success. As we move into the STAAR testing season, It's our job to help students improve their self-talk and to change negative words into positive ones in any situation.

This week spend some time developing positive self-talk among your students. Encourage your students to develop “trigger words”—a positive mantra they connect with and can repeat anytime they need to self-soothe. Trigger words should help the students to feel empowered and may come from a favorite song or movie, as well as what parents and teachers instill in them. My trigger words came from my father: “I am, I can, I will.” Even as adults, we turn to these types of reassuring phrases when we feel self-doubt, fear, or insecurity.

During this week in your PLC’s review the Campus Action Plan and focus on the target goals for your content in regard to the data from the mock STAAR interim Assessment. Continue to analyze your data with your team and make certain your review strategies are aligned with meeting your target goals for student achievement.

Our students need you and rely on you for instruction, compassion and consistency. Thank you for teaching relevant and rigorous lessons and teaching students how to use positive self-talk. Our students are ready to meet and exceed our expectations. You are their role models and your expectations will make a difference in their success this year.

Make it a GREAT week!
