Just a reminder that our Parent-Teacher Conferences are set for Monday and Tuesday, November 19th and 20th as follows:

19th: 1:00-8:00 P.M.

20th: 8:00 A.M.-3:00 P.M.

Please note: These are non-attendance days for students.

In Honor of our Veterans

Veterans who are friends and family of third grade students are invited to join Reed School in a simple tribute assembly/performance to honor the men and women who have served in the armed forces on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM in the Reed gym. The children have learned a few songs in music class and will be doing a choral reading/recitation of a poem for the occasion.

Family Math Problem: Return to School When Completed

We’re continuing with Family Math this year and hope families enjoy spending time together solving problems. A few times a year I am going to describe some Family Math activities that you can complete together at home. These activities pertain to real life, and I hope that they will help students to see the importance that math skills play in adult lives on a daily basis. A few years ago I purchased a great book entitled, Beyond Math Facts and Flashcards: Exploring Math with Your Kids by Jan Mokros. This month’s activities revolve around the Coupon Game. Below are some suggested activities at different grade levels. See what works best for you. Be creative and have fun together.

At-Home Activities:

· Have the children cut out coupons that they think the family might use.

· Sort the coupons into piles using categories, such as healthy foods, things only pets can use, things you use to clean, etc.

· Find coupons in each collection that save the most money.

· Find how many coupons have more or less than a given amount, such as .50.

· Find coupons that, together, will save the family more than a dollar.

Turn in a drawing or picture of your work for inclusion on our Family Math bulletin board and receive a small token of thanks for your efforts. Let's fill the board this month!

This is just a reminder that in accordance with Illinois State Law cell phone use is prohibited in school zones. This law includes the use of text messaging. Your

assistance is greatly appreciated.

Reed School Partners with Local Fire Department to Keep Kids Safe

During Fire Prevention Week, firefighters from the Northwest Homer Fire Department spent two days at Reed School talking with students about the importance of fire safety. In addition to meeting and talking with each class, students walked through the Fire Safety House, which mimics a house with three rooms. Students learned about kitchen and stove safety and learned how to safely exit a house when smoke is present. Since the firefighters were at the school for the day, they even took a few minutes to meet and talk with the students during their lunches.

Reed School's October Students of the Month

Reed students who demonstrated responsible citizenship throughout September were celebrated in a very special way. Three students from each classroom were recognized for their outstanding efforts. Students nominated for this prestigious honor demonstrated the 3 B's in our pledge consistently throughout the month.

All students nominated for the monthly award were recognized and celebrated at the school. The District 92 Foundation for Educational Excellence generously funded the lawn signs for this school-wide project. Look for Student of the Month signs soon in your neighborhood!

Homework After Absences

Per district policy: Upon returning to school, students will be provided with assignments for missing work. Please note that when absent, students miss valuable instructional time that cannot be made up.

November Spirit Days

Bus Pick Up and Drop Off

Please remember to have students at bus stops 5-10 minutes prior to assigned pick up time. Also, an authorized adult needs to be at bus stop to receive students 5-10 minutes prior to assigned drop off time. As the weather changes please be flexible and patient as bus times may be altered due to road conditions, traffic, or construction. Our student's safety is our main concern.

Parents and kids came out for a night of information and fun! Janis Heigl, a math consultant who has been working with the district since it adopted the Bridges Math Program, joined Walsh and Reed parents and students to talk

Reed School's Student Ambassadors 2018-2019

The smiling faces below are our Student Ambassadors for the year. The role of our 2018-2019 student ambassadors is to assist new students in getting acclimated to Reed School. Student ambassadors will have lunches with the new students and even take them on tours! In addition, Reed School Student Ambassadors will greet guest speakers to promote a welcoming atmosphere.

Social Work Corner: The Importance of Attendance

So often when we think about school we think about academics. We see the homework and hear about the projects. As parents, what we don’t always see is the social and emotional learning that takes place throughout your child’s school day. The social/emotional growth of children has been shown to go hand in hand with their academic success. When students miss school, they miss more than just the academic piece of learning. They miss out on feeling a part of their class and their whole school community. For many students, the more school they miss, the more difficult it is for them to return. Some of those early struggles you experienced in getting him/her into the school routine at the beginning of the year return. Please consider making sure your student doesn’t miss more school than absolutely necessary.

Second Step and Social Emotional Learning Standards

This month students are learning about Empathy. Over the next several weeks, they will be talking about the term empathy and what it means, identifying their own and others' feelings, and how to show compassion as we put empathy into action. Not only are these skills taught and reinforced in the classroom, but they are also reinforced in weekly announcements and during Monday Morning Meetings with Ms. Yacobi, the social worker.

Here's an example of a Friday morning announcement before we begin our lesson:

Good morning and Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a great week! Today in SEL you will be learning about compassion. Compassion is EMPATHY in action! Empathy is focusing your attention and listening to others to help you notice how they are feeling. Compassion is noticing other’s feelings and showing that you care or are concerned. For example, a friend’s pet may be sick. You could show compassion by saying, “I’m sorry your pet is sick, you look sad. Is there anything I can do to help?” Showing others you care about them makes you a great friend! Let’s work on putting our empathy in action!

Augmented Reality

3rd grade students used augmented reality to highlight key facts and events in self-selected Literary Nonfiction Books. Then they shared their books and taught 2nd grade friends how to scan auras to see real photos. Seriously cool!

News From the Music Room

The Third Graders have been very busy getting ready for their Veterans Day program on November 9. Just a reminder, please have your child dress in patriotic colors. The program is a tribute to our veterans. If you know of any local veterans, please invite them to come! There will be two performances at 10:00 and 2:00. For the sake of parking space, if your last name begins with A-M, please try to come to the morning performance. If your last name begins with N-Z, please try to come to the afternoon performance.

We are looking forward to learning about and listening to some of the compositions of our November Composer of the Month, Frederic Chopin.

News From the Art Room

The 2nd grade students will be studying and comparing cityscapes painted by a variety of artists. We'll also study the architecture of Chicago. We'll be drawing Chicago cityscapes and using a crayon resist and watercolor technique to add color.

The 3rd grade students will be learning the science behind what causes the Northern Lights. After watching an interesting video with amazing time lapse photography, we'll use pastel chalk to create our own colorful lights. We'll also draw and cut out silhouettes of animals and trees to add to our Northern Lights landscapes.

Physical Education News

PHEW! We have been working so hard here! We are done with our fitness testing. WOO HOO! The kids really enjoy fitness testing. In the Spring students will have a chance to improve on their score. We work on improving scores throughout the year by playing different activities. From here until winter break we will be learning about different muscles, bones and general health. We will also be getting into our Basketball unit very soon. We touch on basic skills and play games involving the skills learned in class.

Don't forget to be wearing proper gym shoes and attire for PE every time. Your schedule is on the PE website. If you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to email us. It is the fastest way to get ahold of us.
