MCCHS FRIDAY FOCUS

Pilgrims on the Way of Truth

12th Edition December 2, 2016

From the Interim Superintendent

Thus begins December! We intensify our focus on academics as we approach the semester exams; we bring the sports indoors; and we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Jesus' birth. May our Lord be the inspiration for all of our actions here at Marian Central.

At the last Council of Administration meeting, representatives voted to engage Gonser Gerber, an nationally-known search firm based in Naperville, to begin the search for our new superintendent. At a meeting this past week, one of their representatives reported that it would take several months to gather information, advertise, receive resumes, vet prospective candidates, and ultimately choose the next individual to be our superintendent. We will keep you apprised of our progress here at Friday Focus.

Another major announcement from the Council is the formation of a Leadership Advisory Committee. This committee, made up of alumni, community leaders, and other representatives, is intended to act as a temporary advisory body to the new superintendent when he or she is hired, hoping to ease the new candidate's transition into our family. The LAC will also help in our school's outreach to our local communities. The list of members is currently being finalized by the school's Executive Committee, and the group will first meet sometime in January to prepare for its role.

From the Spiritual Director

As noted in the previous edition of Friday Focus, our Senior Overnight and Junior Kairos retreats in the spring have had a slight change in date. Our Senior Overnight will now take place on March 8-9, 2017, and the Junior Kairos will take place on March 13-15, 2017. If there is any need for a retreat change, please have your student see Fr. Doyle for a retreat change form.

Speaking of retreats: two day-long retreats will be taking place on December 14th for some of our Juniors and Seniors. Lists will be posted outside of Fr. Doyle's office during the week of December 5th. Please have your students check the lists to see if they are on it.

Finally, our school family will be celebrating the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception in a special way. At the scheduled All School Mass on December 8th, Fr. Doyle will be consecrating the school to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, as well as enthroning pictures of the Sacred Hearts outside of the school chapel. We ask that our school be placed in the hearts of Jesus and Mary to protect and guide us as we walk as "pilgrims on the Way of Truth."

Highlights & News

Underclass Portrait RETAKES will take place on MONDAY, DECEMBER 12TH!

DeWane studio will be distributing portraits Dec. 6th and 7th, and have portrait retakes scheduled for Monday, Dec. 12th during the lunch hours in the Gym Commons. Information about retakes will be included in the portrait packages distributed on the 6th & 7th.

Planning Time Off? PLEASE KNOW OUR REQUIRED PROCEDURES!

If you are planning to take THREE or more days off school, you MUST send your notification in writing to the school office at least ONE WEEK prior to the dates requested. The school office then issues a "Student Advanced Notice Leave Form" that the student must take from class to class to have teachers fill out. As this Christmas break approaches, please plan communication accordingly with the front office. For example - if your student will not be at school Mon - Wed, Dec. 19 - 21st (even with the 21st as a half-day) you must have your written request turned into the school office by Monday, December 12th.

Every day, we work through attendance issues as quickly as possible to make sure all students are safe and accounted for. Knowing these absences in advance help expedite this necessary process.

Here's the link to the Student Handbook (please see page 19 for more information!)

A Reminder About Dress Code...

We are noticing several students who are considered "Out of Uniform" for various reasons: boots being worn with slacks tucked in, long hair/unshaven (boys), several students wearing gym shoes, and ripped sweaters. We pride ourselves on building a culture of self-respect - and proper attire is a necessary part of a student's career here at Marian. We have been giving plenty of verbal warnings, now that the uniform season has changed, but we will issue detentions to those who are found out of uniform. We are reaching out to our families to help reinforce this policy, and stand by our enforcement. Click here for a visual guide to our uniform policy.

Do you live in McHenry? Can you help with a carpool next year?

The Admissions Office has an incoming freshman family for the 2017-2018 school year that would like to connect with a carpool to provide a ride to and from school. The family lives just off Rt. 31 in McHenry. Please contact Mike Maloney at (815) 338-4220 ext. 108, or email at mmaloney@marian.com if you may be able to help. Thank you!

Attention Seniors working on college applications!

Please be aware that the Guidance office is closed during Christmas break. If you are applying to any colleges/universities that have application deadlines of January 1st through January 15th, you will need to turn in your transcript and recommendation (if applicable) requests to Guidance by no later than Monday, December 12th, in order to give our staff enough time to process your request. If you are using the Common Application, this also means that you will need to at least invite Mrs. Reed, the senior counselor, by that time too (December 12th.) If you are unsure of how to do any of this, please stop by the Guidance Office before December 12th!

Last week, we promised a few photos of some of our students and the great things they do! Enjoy a look back at some highlights!
