Power to the Little People: Using Drawings and Video Responses to Enhance Learning
We all know about the benefits of displaying visual aides to support students' understanding of concepts; but how often do we think about allowing students demonstrate their understanding of concepts by using visual aides?
At a recent literacy conference, FECC teachers were inspired by a conversation pertaining to this topic. Documenting learning through sketches, photos, and video responses provide children the opportunity to articulate their ideas in a variety of ways (think about your language impaired students, struggling writers, and multilingual learners) while also strengthening memory through the use of visual representations.
Technology can be a powerful tool when placed in the hands of a child at any age- but so can paper and a pencil :) The goal is to use both systems often enough that the novelty wears off and children get the tool they get, and they don't get upset!
Below are a few ideas of how you can give power to your students by having them demonstrate their learning in creative ways (using paper, on Seesaw's Draw Tool, Seesaw's Photo/Video Tool, or FlipGrid)
- Draw your learning in 4 pictures (or 2 pictures... or 1)-- Nonfiction read alouds/guided reading small groups/book clubs
- Retelling through pictures (sketching pictures of important parts)
- Sketch the setting
- Sketch the character and write or record about character feelings, traits, etc.
- Book "Shelfies"- Take a selfie with a book you enjoyed and record a response giving reasons why others should read it (Seesaw or FlipGrid)
- Video reflections (Seesaw, Flipgrid) to articulate learning, wonderings, etc.
The Best "KEEPT" Secret in your Google Suite
These virtual sticky notes allow you to:
- Color code your lists/notes
- Collaborate with others on a specific list/note
- Add reminders to lists/notes
- Record an audio note
- Use an image as a note for yourself
- Access it from ANY device you can sign into Google with! (computer, tablet, phone, etc.)
Your lists can now travel with you! No paper necessary :)

PROUD OF YOUR STUDENTS?
Consider signing up for the May 9th District Technology Showcase! Teachers are invited to select students who have used technology in purposeful and/or powerful ways.
Last year, we had Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade Students show off their skills using the Code & Go Mouse, Ozobots, Seesaw, & Classlink QR Codes to log into Chromebooks.
It was so great to watch the children show off these skills to the district community! Elementary, Middle and High School students and teachers were most impressed when they saw our Franklin Students shine!
