WHY DO CHRISTIANS HAVE WORSHIP ON SUNDAY?

Early Christians actually used to worship on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath. It was this Sabbath that gave the world the six day work week. By the late 50's some Christians decided it would be better to start the first day of the week on Sunday in memory of the Resurrection of Jesus. Christians keep Sunday as a day of rest and worship and some even refer it to as the "Sabbath". However, some Christians like the Seventh Day Adventist are distinguished because it still performs the liturgy on Saturday and not Sunday. It is actually Constantine the Great who made this great change approximately 300 years after the Messiah's death and became Christian on his death bed.

WHAT ACTIVITIES OCCUR ON SUNDAY?

WORSHIP

Christians wake up early on Sunday and prepare to go to Church or "liturgy" by wearing appropriate or formal attire. The service is usually performed by a priest or someone with Christian authority who delivers a sermon to remind Christians to be good, help the poor, keep praying to God, etc. Sunday is also known as Lord's Day. Sunday School is also offered to young Christians so they can learn more about God and Christianity.

DAY OF REST

Christians take this day off of work, hard labor and any other activities that would normally be performed every other day of the week. In many Christian dominated societies, Sunday is usually a weekend which is not a surprise given what it stands for many Christians.

WHAT IS THE SIGINIFICANCE OF WORSHIP ON SUNDAY?

The significance of changing the "Sabbath" from the last day of the week, Saturday, to the first day of the week, Sunday, was that it gave Christians a new holy day to have their own worship and to distinguish itself from the Jewish Sabbath. However, not all Churches answer in the same way. The Seventh Day Adventists worship on Saturday and argue that the Sabbath was one of the Ten Commandments, and is therefore part of God's permanent will for His people. In the Bible Jesus claimed that he was “lord even of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:28), and therefore had the authority to change it to a different day.

QUOTES FROM THE BIBLE THAT SUPPORT WHY SABBATH ON SUNDAY?

"Now on the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight" (Acts 20:7).

"I [John] was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet" (Revelation 1:10).

WHY SEVENTH DAY ADVENTISTS WORSHIP ON SATURDAY

Exodus 35:2

Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death.

By reading just this one verse, it supports that Sabbath should still have been performed on Saturday as there are actually no verses in the Bible to worship on Sunday or in the Gospels after Jesus had supposedly allowed the change to occur. This can easily be explained as Christianity took many components of Judaism when it was created. Over time the different thoughts and ideas of influential people have greatly changed the religion and created up to 362,000 denominations within Christianity today. By just reading this quote found in the book of Exodus, many people including Christians would want to question how Sabbath came to be on Sunday and why there aren't any pieces of evidence to support this change in the Gospels as Jesus was the one who apparently authorized this change.
